actually 3G is only about 2 years old. affordable hispeed internet on a phone is brand new. its the future. once more ram and proc speed get in these then we say goodbye to laptops

hahaha 3G??? I was streets ahead of you with my snazzy WAP at least 5 years ago.
BTW 3G is as good as dead, its WIMAX which is the future.
Who wants high speed internet on a phone?? Human voice goes upto about 3.4kHz. Due to filter limitations, circuit is designed for 4kHz maximum input frequency.
Using Nyquist sampling theorem, sample signal at 8kHz. Use 256 discrete digitised levels = 8 bits. 8kHz x 8bits = 64kbps data rate.
This is basic telecomms theorey. Why would I need super high speed internet to send 64kbps?? Do people really want to send massive pictures and videos between phones? Am I really out of touch?

Maybe in the good old inbred US of A. 3G has been available in the UK since 2002 and we had HSCSD in 1999 which is more than capable of allowing you to post messages on the internets.

Actually WIMAX isn't much use as a replacement for 3g as it can't handle node switching.
I agree about the pics and video thing though...the only time I have ever done it is via Bluetooth when I am talking with someone face to face to get a shitty 30 second porn clip they insist I need to have or my brain will explode or something.

exactly, people are always trying to send "funny" videos and pictures.
Maybe not the current WIMAX, but from what I've heard the whole data comms/ voice comms will join together. Essentially they are all the same. digital data is digital data.
Companies don't want to spend maga bucks on 3G and WIMAX infrastrucure, they are looking to just go for one wireless high speed data protocol I'm sure this will happen.
If I were a mobile company, the only reason I'd carry on with 3G is to jusify the ripoff prices paid to get a license for it.

With the advent of nanotronics replicating inside your guts you'll be able to simply belch and conjur before you an instant Comm Cloud that you'll be able to navigate by blowing into it and sending it across the globe to anyone you want to be on the receiving end of it.
