It might be good for us to know what kind of music you like,
Nac, before we can prescribe to you the "must-buy" albums.

Except for the peanutbutter part.

I bet cambells shrimp soup is made of the shrimp heads only
or something, or their eyeballs. All well; I'm about to eat
some. I put that + string beans + black beans + eggs +
instant potatoes + bacon in a frying pan. It looks like my
soul; a bubbling putrid mess.

Overrated, lazy touchstone fetted by journos but supremely
irrelevant to anyone else. It's middle class, suburban
escapismm, it's about as musically "fresh" as a sample pack
played on random and it bears about 2 repeat plays before
you see right through it.

True, the music hacks love it. But those labels are easily
applied to anything we choose, without the need to REALLY
say anything about the music itself.

I'm off to beddy-byes. When I wake up with a fresh head I
might have an inkling of an idea how the Burial album can be
described as "middle class".

hey nac, i'm here to tell you that you shouldn't read all
the other posts and you should ignore your buying urge. YOU

redundant albums which are puked into the market each day.
you can do it, nacmod. YOU CAN DO IT!

"But those labels are easily

say anything about the music itself."

I agree. It's all too easy to write stuff off and reduce
music like he did. I haven't actually heard Burial (he might
be right in that instance), but I've seen enough comments
like that about good albums to be wary; people might call
Ultravisitor "a wanky, self-indulgent noise fest", but I
just think it's a bloody exciting album.

Is it so easy? If it was so easy everyone would be doing it,
but no, I did it with sweat and tears, my seemingly
effortless little tirade took a lot of work. I had to really
think why Burial gets on my tits.

Well, I didn't have to think that hard.

Anyway, at least I've listened to him. You haven't even
bothered. Maybe we should all not listen to music but just
assume it's great.

criticism, it's the critic's fault, not the music.

If you claim to be any sort of critic you tell us in what
way Burial's music is "middle class escapism", not cling to
lazy labels. Slag it to high heaven for all I care, just
give me a bit more.

Good for you. It's well-programmed cliche-free beats,
deployment of vocal samples placed deep in the mix and
tension-inducing synths will have you going back again and
again.

For me it does what electronic dance music does so rarely
these days; it evokes human feelings and transcends the cold
machines used to produce it. I think it's difficult to do
but when done well it's...well, great.

Oh now it makes sense, you're writing to us from BEFORE
people actually made electronic music, and you're relying on
what old rockists feared Synths would do to music. Ok, let's
go from there.

I've never understood the phrase deep in the mix.

No. My use of 'these days' refers to the fact that more
recently I've become tired of electronic dance music (more
specifically club dance music) and become more interested in
other music, like jazz, improv, composition 'world music'
etc. I am not referring to contemporary music per se, more
my current listening habits.

Music made electronically can sound rigid and cold at times
and my point is that it is very hard, and takes much skill,
to create dance music that has the feeling of something made
by Fela Kuti, say. I am by no means from any "rockist"
camp.

Marlowe: my clumsy writings refer to vocal samples that
don't sound forced and sit awkwardly above the percussive
and melodic layers. Part of the challenge of making music
with computers is NOT having the listener imagine the layers
of samples/tracks on the monitor.

I'm in danger of disappearing up my own arsehole. Let's
forget Burial.
