called 'beryl'
i'd not heard of it before. looks pretty impressive. all eyecandy, but still, it beats Vista hands down, and is a linux GUI. fair play and all that.

is that the only thing people look for in an OS now? how pretty it looks?

seems to be.
i'm totally against it really - linux for the masses is a stupid idea, and also, i'd prefer a minimalist GUI over one with loads of eyecandy.
i just found the youtube video quite impressive.
also, you're a complete fucking twat.

I've been using beryl with kubuntu for the past month or so and it's very pretty and very useful.. as far as I'm concerned there's no reason to keep windows when you can do everything and more, and it's usually easier. There's a steeper learning curve to juice your OS for more performance (kernel compiling etc) but it's well worth it.
and beryl .2 is about to come out

Beryl has been mentioned a few times before (even before they named the stupid thing beryl). The whole "better than Vista" thing is a bit subjective, personally, I think beryl it looks like a heap of pretty pointless visual effects designed for geek wow factor that would become tiresome after about 30 seconds.
I prefer the more balanced form and function of the Vista interface.
On a side note, I don't see why Linux for masses is a stupid idea? Would it be because Linux users wouldn't feel as special any more?

No, it's because it's a server OS. Windows functions better than any of the desktop environments that i've encountered on linux, and i just have a contempt for all those little gui tools that configure the system when the whole job can be done far easier with a text editor at a console prompt..
it's like hiding the true beauty of it..

I always wonder who actually wants those effects you see in that thing there and windows, etc... I always turn stuff like that off immediately.. "ooo, the menu fades in" bah! It's more like "aarg, the menu takes longer to appear!"

I'm exactly the same. First thing I do following a windows install is go into system, perfomance, visual effects and turn every damn effect off. I'd rather be able to run an extra VST than have a animated window minimise.

Have you tried using http://www.nliteos.com/?
Pretty configurable. I've not used it yet but I haven't installed windows on this machine for ages. I should probably clean this machine up though and do that.

seems aight, i dont use windows that often so on my windows laptop i use window blinds (the program) to put a clean lookin skin on there, doesnt take up much CPU power, then i put windows on the best performance option and im happy.

will my Protools soundcard work? No. Also I don't have time to wrestle with tons of wankery in the terminal.
The Linux boxes I have to administer at work are a pain in the butt.
I'd say Linux is at the same stage windows was just before win3.1 and that's being nice. Of cause that's a big IMO.

Linux is alright, its just simply not anywhere near the point of it gaining ground on market share of OSX or Windows. Alot of people are still scared i guess of Linux since by nature its not the most user friendly in terms of GUI doing alot of the work. SuSe, Redhat and Ubuntu are making an effort to get Linux out to a wider audience but who knows when we will see a larger home audience using Linux, perhaps never? If you know how to use Linux its a powerful operating system, being that its hosting networks all over, just not to many people rushing out to tackle learning a whole new OS too.
