Ok, I think I may have mentioned this before, but I can't
remember what people thought of it.

The basic idea is one single acoustic instrument several
times: you play with yourself (naughty boy). Each line
recorded should be a different melody (though notes may, of
course, overlap at times), and you should have at
least
three lines (though not necessarily all the time).
Percussive elements needn't be from this one instrument, but
it'd make it all a bit more interesting.

Also, since some or most of us don't necessarily have real
acoustic instruments, you're allowed to use synths with the
restriction that it sounds like or is supposed to sound like
an acoustic instrument.

To illustrate: I did a track for three pianos a while back
Politifullmektig, which, if it were to be played live, would
require three piano players on three different pianos. I'm
also working on another one, but it's got more of a.. rough
feel to it, and I don't know what it'll turn out like in the
end.

Anyone up for it?

?

This one is out of sync because it's originally one long
take without metronome that I just cut together after... I
didn't remember exactly what I'd played (it's a loooong
take), so I didn't bother re-recording each line.. mostly
because I liked the feel it got.

anyway, the point isn't that song, but rather if people are
up for it. I'd love to hear some more compositions with the
same idea, and the more diverse the instruments, the better!
Maybe I should do one with didgeridoo?

so what? the same intrument, 3 different players? at the
same time? overlaping melodies? on the same intruments? 3
differrent players?b *head explodes*

so we're only allowed to use one vst, but 3 different
melodies on top of eachother? or 3 different instances of
the vst?

yes, but only if the vst sounds like an acoustical
instrument, and it would be better if you actually had an
acoustical instrument. Your voice is a good one.

record yourself reading three different speeches, add 1 to 2
to 3.

I'm thinking of 'line' as one horizontal tracker-like row. I
guess you mean a verticle line such as one wav file played
to its entireinimininity.

So basically have 3 simultaneous melodies? Any rules
regarding how similar the melodies are? same tempo, notes,
note placement.

At least three simultaneous different melodies
at some point in the track. Acoustic instrument or at
least something that mimics one such. The rest is up to you,
dear Noll.

That's nothing more than polyphony, as done on just about
any piece of music. But I will make something.

the restriction is one single instrument

guitars aside, there aren't many pieces for only one
instrument, and, basically, only one player (just at
different times) around. Have you ever heard a song for 8
same-tuned harmonicas with a different melody to each?

offline w M w from London (United Kingdom) on 2007-02-03 14:08 [#02044382]

Can you cheat the sameness by having each seperate melody a
different octave?

Aren't you just talking about a three-part invention, as
Bach wrote? Or even a three-part fugue?

This isn't really that great of an idea to be honest. In
fact it sounds like a dumbed down version of a lot of old
ideas.

I have no idea + not necessarily.

I'd really like it if people used as many melodies as
possible at the same time without it getting out of hand:
three is the minimum.

Bach once wrote a fugue for eight 'voices'. That's getting
to serious headfuck territory.

Anyway, I'll make a piece featuring several intertwined
melodies on one 'acoustic' instrument (ie a vst emulation of
one) :)

eight different voices performed on the same instrument?

the most I could find the last time was seven pianos, which
I thought was awesome considering the size of a piano, plus
some of the music was truly awesome.

Also, I'd like people to.. well, I wouldn't really like you
to experiment in that "do something that sounds weird" way,
but rather in that "you are free to do whatever you want
within the limitations" way. In other words, as long as it's
the same instrument and three times, do anything
you feel like
.

Drunken Mastahs Bad Idea Submission

= 4 chords repeated over and over (each cord has 3 notes,
ie. there are 3 seperate melodies all playing at exactly the
same time intervals) Then I took each seperate melody and
made more intricate seperately, then played all
simultaneously.

For it to be pretentious I'd have to claim some sort of

just saying that I'm interested in hearing what people make

Drunken Bla Bla 2nd Suck

This is simultaneous melodies but the first goes only on
rows 0,4,8 etc, the 2nd on 1,5,9,etc, etc so the individual
notes never play at the same time. Plus I made it suck as a
bonus and not really even use the rule of whatever I just
said or something.

And stuff.

Or something.

Universe: uh oh, I forgot to program what would happen to
light reflecting off a concave area of a spoon... um, I'll
just make it upside down.. yeah, that'll work I guess.
(before that bug was fixed, you would see a swirling purple

Maybe if you shine a rainbow off the concave area of a spoon
the dimension hole can be opened up again somehow. Most
likely.

I do this alot with my music currently, but then I add a
bunch of stuff over it...usually with guitars and pianos,
really tough writing the main melody line, but writing the 2
other accompaniments usually is quicker

w M w : Bad Idea Submission was the dope: like little

preferred the first one, although I like the way this one
finishes :D

Yeah, I was pretty pleased with the ending too :D I had
ended it after the first "strummed" chord (B7), but thought,
no, it's too short, so I extended it and added the coda with
the double-syncopated melody in treble and bass, and the
little flourish at the end really lends it a baroque
feeling!

About the RPG soundtrack, all the music I make seems to be
tinged with some kind of video game atmosphere/sound! And
the irony is, I hardly ever play video games! :D
