oh, right I just checked the etymology it does indeed stem from pinecone; it resembles a pinecone and at that time pinecones were called pineapples. Then some nitwit pointed his finger and said "pineapple!" and it somehow stuck. After a while, people couldn't tell pineapples from pineapples and invented a new word for the one least commonly encountered. How people encountered pinecones less commonly than pineapples, I don't know (maybe because we don't eat pinecones?), but pineapples still sukck. |
