HELP! harddisk recovery

my 1TB harddisk has just suddenly decided to start failing.
I can't access it - drive I/O failure according to windows.

is there any software out there that could help with the
recovery of my files? it's an NTFS partition.

:(

1TB?? That does seem a bit large.

I suggest trying to mount the disc under linux and trying to
get at those pesky files. Of course it could be an
electrical failure. You can always change the PCB on the
disc if that is the case, however you may need to send it
back to do this.

I'm assuming from what you're saying that it's a slave and
not a boot drive. And this sounds like a hardware failure,
not a fucked up partition.

First of all, find out if the drive spins up. Shut down,
disconnect the other drives from the ide and power cables,
then start up and hear if it spins.

If it doesn't spin up, it will cost you hundreds if not
thousands to have your stuff recovered by pros.

If it spins up, power down again and try connecting it as a
slave to another ide channel - like where you normally have
a CD connected. Or try it in a USB enclosure if you have one
available.

2x500gb)

Ah, that makes sense. Does it function as some sort of raid
array or can the drives be taken out and mounted
independently?

nah, it#s just one solid brick.. it#s spinning up, and the
files are being recovered with that tool that phobs
reccomended. apparently it#ll take a day and 5 hours to
complete at the moment (ETA is rising 1 minute per
second..)

then i have to find places to store everything temporarily
:(

disaster

You're bereting me for not replying to a thread I never
saw?
Now that's unreasonable.
Believe me, if I'd seen a thread with someone recommending
Lacie drives, I'd have said something.

I will only buy Seagate from now on.
and I use Media Tools pro for data recovery. I suspect
phob's choice is equally as efficient.

Thought for the future: get a USB drive enclosure and put
your own choice of hard drive in it - one of the higher spec
Western Digitals or something. Drive manufacturers have a
shit grade that goes in brandname shitboxes, and a higher
grade server model with a higher MTBF. Who knows what was in
that lacie unit - I assume it's glued or riveted shit to
prevent you finding out without voiding the warranty.

The only model from WD that I'd recommend is the Raptor.

I've had 5-6 previous WD-models which got corrupted.

I have an internal 200GB Seagate Barracuda and an external
250GB Western Digital. So far I have had no problem with
either of them.

sweet software. cheers.

i found out, a bit late, that there's still a version of
scandisk on windows - "chkdsk".. i cancelled the NTFS
recovery software (it was due to take another 2 days) and
ran it. it fixed 64KB of bad blocks in a few seconds.

talked to a friend, he says don't use the HD until i'm
transferring everything off it before i RMA it. cheers for
the help.
