Oh yes, [spam].

I rarely make topics, and spam in them even less, yet here
we are, bolstered after the near-praise of almost

three people for the last snippet I posted.

Here is a rough rendition of a melody that's been

floating around in my head for a while and, after bashing it
out with piano and violin samples (yes, again) I

can't actually tell if it's worth pursuing, developing
further, or recording properly. I've spent too long

listening to it :/
So, anyone fancy downloading it and offering their opinion?

it's definitely worth pursuing further!

you should do a few more tracks of violins used in a
rhythmic manner.. like, you have small stabs far far in the
background doing a sort of hihat and in certain parts you
could do some pizzicato that follows the tune for just a few
notes... sure, it'd get a very very "made for orchestra"
feel to it, but I think it'd fit it.

Also, because I'm getting back to it recently, I'd love to
hear some microbeats on it, but that may just be me.

it'd probably be better if you did it, but I'm going to try
putting microbeats on just to see what happens (it may
explode).

it didn't work

that's either because I'm uninspired or, equally likely, I
was wrong in my initial assumption about the place of
microbeats in this composition.

Well I wrote it along to a cheesy breakbeat used as a
click-track so theoretically a steady rhythm should work.

yeah, but I was thinking the type of sound would fit it, but
it didn't. I don't even know if any type of percussion would
suit it.

but you should definitely do more! finish it!

i like it a lot, the sound and everything, but i do feel the
melodies could be just a tad more exciting.

there are some wonderful moments like the last few chords
you do, and some other progressions in there, but the song
as a whole didn't exactly sit correctly to my ears, mostly
because of the melody.

but i feel there is a lot to be had from this style, so cant
wait to hear your next one..

That's very conscientious of you. I thought most people gave
comments based on the poster's popularity without actually
listening to it.

I don't think the comments they give are based on the
posters popularity, but people seem to have only certain
people they'll bother listening to, and sometimes that also
means they won't listen to someone they haven't listened to
before.

well I'm pretty sure if dog_belch would post a track there
would be more replys. not because his music is better but
because he's so awsome.

well

there may be more replies because he's dog belch, but that's
just because there'll be lots of people "wanting to get back
at him" or something as well.

and his music is quite good at times. I'm not too
fond of some of the stuff that sounds too much like
fruityloops (though I suspect some of it he made while he
was drunk), but I have a few of his tracks in the playlist
and they're welcome returns whenever it hits them.

I liked it. I think some pitched up 1 or 2 octave "runs" of
the melody for a few notes here and there would go well.
Perhaps if they had a fair bit of reverb on them or were
panned to the extremes?

thanks for the response. it's just a rough working of an
idea, not a finished track by any means, so the melody
hasn't really been developed very much yet. i just wanted to
get the thing down and out of my head.

yeah there's plenty of scope for development in there. it's
basically just a core idea that i wanted to get the feel
of.
i'll probably leave it untouched for a month or so and come
back to it fresh with new ideas.

mmm... reverb...

this is a nice melody. like the strings. you should
definately develop it! also yes it is hard to get feedback
off of people in this place. i usually get a couple of
responses after a few bumps which is a shame as when i do
get then i always get useful stuff. guess im not cool enough
though.

It's not bad in any thinkable way, but still, it didnt
create any emotions in me.

To be fair, i've just listened for 3 hours straight to a net
radio station that only plays irish music (wich i adore),
and i stopped it to listen to this, and it just struck me as
sort of bleh.

At another time, and another place i might have enjoyed it,
but it just didn't do anything for me.

I'm sorry, because i can't really elaborate on WHY it doesnt
do anything for me.

For me, personally, the quality stuff i did, i always had a
gut feeling that i needed to finish it. If you don't know if
it's worth finishing, don't bother.

If you don't feel it yourself, why should anyone else?

A fair comment. I'm pretty sure I want to do more with it,
or I wouldn't have posted it in the first place, but
sometimes I'm not the best judge of my own efforts :)

Plus I think most stuff might pale in comparison to 3 hours
of irish music. You'd be knackered if nothing else.

As a rule of thumb, i don't give a negative critisism if i
think it's bad music. Then i just keep my mout shut. So me
saying something about your music is a good sign in the
first place.

It's annoying as FUCK when some dickhead says something
about your music, that you've worked hard with for a long
time, so i'm sorry about that.

I like your style, I think constructive criticism is great,
but being a dick just because it didnt suit your fancy is
nonsense.

btw whats the irish station?

xceque I do quite like the melodies, I can sense this
emotion weaving through however it is somewhat faint. I
chalk that up to the fact that it isnt finsihed yet and more
of a conceptual idea. I do hope you finish it and post it
when youre done. do you have any finished tracks that I
could listen to?

thanks. I think the feel of it is flat because, out
of the necessity of keeping a rhythm, I applied samples
against a steady beat. This'll make the rythmn in general a
bit mechanical, plus using pitched samples (even though
they're from a real piano) will add to that effect.
I need to make the spaces between notes more natural by not
sticking to the rhythm, which I can do now I've got an idea
of how it might be.

xceque, it's nice!

If you'd care to develope the melody the more, i.e. make it
longer, I believe it'd sound nice if you added
reverb-effects to background-sounds, echoes.

However if you'd skip the ambient-approach, add a fat, tight
beat with a little acid-touch, and there you go. :)

I think it has loads of potential. I really liked the way it
was building up. It kind of dropped off in the last 20
seconds or so. I think if you were to keep building it and
really doing some interesting layering it could be a very
intense and pleasurable listen.

Definately keep me posted.
