Mixing without decks

I run a blog that I'm hoping to put weekly/fortnightly
mixes up on just to keep me active. I don't have any decks
now though and definitely can't afford them. So I think I
have 2 options:

1. Use mp3 mixing software such as Mixxx (which has
problems at the moment with the headphone cue - which is a
bit of a problem)

or

2. Basically use cubase to create a mix of tunes I like.

Option 1 is a bit of problem with Mixxx having some errors
at the moment with headphone cueing. Does anyone know of any
good open-source alternatives, or strongly recommend any
purchasable dj'ing software.

Option 2 makes me wonder whether it is really a mix set!
Would you feel hard-done by downloading a mix that wasn't
actually dj'd but 'constructed'?

Traktor or Live. Download the demos and try
them out.

The way I used to do it was in Cool Edit Pro.

I'd take a 4 bar loop of each track that I wanted to mix and
see how long they were. The % difference was also the %
speed adjustment you needed to make to mix the tracks.
Results varied between awesome and terrible depending on the
track.

You could do the same thing with Audacity if you wanted to
keep it cheap. My explanation probably sucks balls but the
jist of the idea is there.

As for the construction thing. Radio Soulwax Part 2 was
basically a construction and I loved it. I enjoy both types
of mixes myself. Just because someone hasn't done it live
doesn't mean that they haven't put effort in. If I could
link you up to Fuck Analord by deepspace9mm then I would but
I lost it when my old site hosts deleted everything on the
server. Fucking cunts. It might be floating about somewhere.

i'm not sure i know the purpose of mixes at all. here at
work a guy always sends me his trance mixes (he calls them
'projects') through local chat. i don't know how can i
listen to five sent mixes, each around 400 megs and more
than one hour long and full of music i don't usually like.

i've downloaded some mixes from xltradio and xltvibes. all
deleted when i needed space.

one constructed mix still is on hdd - it's Fuck Analord.

i think that mix is the same as his xlt radio show? its on
the bittorrent page if it is...

anyway if you want to mix live then go for Traktor, if you
dont mind the contructed mix thing then Ableton, but they
are very different animals in terms of the process and the
result, in my opinion.

I have cubase and once did a 5 hour mix for a friends
birthday present. Getting beat matching was difficult
though.

I don't have 200 quid spare at the moment to get tracktor,
especially with christmas approaching and a nasty credit
card bill to pay off!

Awesome. I'll check that tonight. I hope it is as it was one
of my favourite mixes.

The mixes on my zilty radio show were done in Live and were
done, well Live.

I guess I like mixes when I can't decide what music to play.
It's nice to just put one on and let it play through. I
often find tracks and artists that are new to me and go
investigating as a result.

Well I can't really be the judge of that to be honest. I
thought they sounded good. Give it a download and find out
:P

1 deck (no computer)

3. Use Mixmeister to do a mix on the fly.

Here is my Xltronic radioshow which is a great example of
what can be done with Mixmeister. I also used some pre-mixed
parts btw.

3CD torrent version @ 192vbr (341Mb)

Direct Download Part 1 @ 160kb (125Mb)
Direct Download Part 2 @ 160kb (108Mb)

xltronic-radio-20051011-deepspace9mm.mp3
I'm not 100% sure its the mix were talking about but try it,
if its an amazing mix then thats it...

by the way there is a very simple version of Traktor, im not
sure what the price is but i see it bundled with hardware
all the time so it cant be much. It might be good cause then
youll know how to work traktor in case you want to get the
fancy version

I had a quick look at the demo of mixmeister.. unfortunately
it doesn't look like it supports ogg files, which is what
I've encoded most of my cd's in, therefore leaving my music
collection a little bare!

It looked good on what it did with the mp3's I did try in
it. Seemed fairly accurate.

It's time to convert your music to the standard mp3 format
then ;)

I just had a look at the traktor site, and the new version 3
does take ogg files as well. so that's encouraging.

I might have a look at the demo
