everything sounds pretty cheap/boring to me. before you
start doing more drum edits I'd work on a better melody or
bassline or whatever you wanna call that thing that's
playing in the background. it sounds like you just punched
in some notes. and the sound itself is pretty cheesy and
basic, it has no depth. how about some sound design first?
there is more to music then just having weird beats. the
second half is ok. but it just sounds like you're trying to
hard.

btw this is nothing personal

How about a vocal line, try singing:

"Tongue-tied, (I'm) short of breath, don't even try
Try a little harder
Something's wrong, you're not naive, you must be strong
Ooh, baby, try
Hey girl, move a little closer.
You're

Too shy shy
Hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy
Hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy
Hush hush, eye to eye
Too shy shy
Hush hush

Modern medicine falls short of your complaints
Ooh, try a little harder
You're moving in circles, won't you dilate
Baby try
Hey girl, move a little closer
'Cause, you're

Too shy.......

the thing is it's just a battle track. melody kind of has no
place in it - the bassline is enough i think in that case.
its just really supposed to be skeletal like that and then i
control what gets played live. youll notice its split
3minutes evenly.

what is cheesy about the sounds? just do not hit hard enough
or,? bassline should have more notes im listening to that
clap now and i not really feeling it. was a sucky choice

and could you listen to this one too while youre at it?
mp3
just did that one this morning too. thanks godel!

I like the way you use the k in place of a c...sort of
reminds me of skam. you know, skam, the label that releases
work by...

I'll listen after I have eaten.

the label that releases work by...

you know i just realized that skam doesnt have mortal &
chemist in their shop anymore - whats up with that? anyways,
yes, swapping c's/k's is definitely only the work of skam
and i am a copycat

its cool i gues just keep in mind its a battle track not a
song, when i play it live @ the next beat battle its just
going to be insane all that shit's skeletal, like Zot just
critisized the sound design i could use some advice on that,
like, EQ, stuff, stuff,i dont know? i just realized im going
to be late as hell for work

well the bassline buildup is gonna start it off definitely

so there aren't melodies in those battles?

so, what do you actually do as the live part of them? (I'm
just asking)

well people use melodies but youll usually get booed so i
stay the fuck away from them. i keep it simple- crowds love
really ugly basslines though that drop hard, usually

the standout live part is just beat manipulation in response
to the crowd,. besides triggering loops the mainstay is like
in this song where i cut between 3 tracks that have stuff on
them

how odd... I think I'd get really bored really quick at one
of those things, but that's apparently just me...

offline cygnus from nowhere and everyplace on 2006-10-06 12:13 [#01983303]

it'll be cool once i figure out how to send groups of midi,
and like be able to turn off a bunch of stuff with a fader
or a button and then hit another one for a fill, so i can be
like, Du-Dooga-Dooga-Frrsstppaappaa Duugaduuga DuDUUGA
ffRrsstaapaapa without having to use all the fingers on my
hands

but., yeah.there are guys who will perform actual songs that
have like 32 bar buildups with no beats, and, yeah, it
doesnt work

I dunno what to say here. I think it would probably work in
a live setting...not really listening music though and
unless anyone here has exposure to the 'battles' you refer
to I guess you won't get much helpful advice.

well.. your songs are good (I actually have a few in my
playlist), but they're also a bit tiring and you get a
feeling of monotony if you listen to many in a row, so I
never listen to lots of them in sequence.. I didn't figure
they were intended to as they were random spams, but if
you're ever doing an album, you definately need to expand
your repertoire.. maybe get away from the laptop battles?
anyway, if I was at one of those battles and it's all like
this, I'd be out of that room in under three tracks...

you should really learn how to play the piano.. you don't
need to get super good, just play around with it and get a
feel for it.. maybe read up on scales and techniques. I
think it could add a new aspect to your music.

I rather liked it. It never stayed exactly the same for too
long - progressing quite nicely. It does have a
pretty similar flow to recent autechre, but not really any
more so that a lot of other music and this one certainly
isn't bad at all.
The only real critisism is that it sounds a bit flat. Not
sure if it's the sounds used or that any particular
instrument sounds exactly the same each time it appears.
The end seems like the structure ought to continue in a
groove and start layering with slight variations rather than
continuing by simply varying, like it has done up till then.

i dont get the concept of the battles... someone sets up a
tune then you have to mix yours into it or is it just who so
ever has the 'phattest beatz' wins? cos then its really just
a battle of the bands but without any showmanship.

below: GIS 'laptop battle'

you basically get 3 minutes in 4 elimination rounds to
improvise whatever you can using software and midi, in the
end its whoever's the most clever and inventive with , yes,
'phat beatz'

is someone monitoring you to see what youre doing? do you
get judged on that as well as crowd reaction?

yeah youre judged on how much you can get the crowd movin,
the crowd is half of the show really cauz everyone goes
nuts. judges watch what youre doing, yeah. for someone like
me its hard not to monitor cause i do everything on the
controller, i usually close the laptop lid
