Why 10", rather than 12"?

Is there any particular reason why people would press 10"
vinyl, rather than 12", particularly when 10" is more
expensive than 12" (unless we're talking 180 Gram 12"s
compared to lighter 10"s)?

The portability of 10" isn't noticeably better (as 7" are)
and cases/bags made for 10" are almost non-existant.

10" is just cooler.

I imagine its a novelty much like 3" CDs, they probably cost
more too

You're probably right. For some reason though, whilst I like
3" cds, I find 10" records rather unfulfilling. They just
seem like "not quite a 12", rather than something very
different. Now, a 5" record on the other hand (perhaps with
a reflective surface to mimic a CD) would be a different
proposition entirely...

Do you like the feel of a full 12" in your hand Ceri?

Yep, pure gimmick. Just like coloured vinyl + picture discs.
I don't even like 7" releases either *gasp*

12" is the way and the light.

Reflective surface might be a bit much to ask, but the 5"
vinyl is definitely out there...

10 inch records are cheaper to press up. Most 12s I've
bought don't use the whole time possible anyway.

10" is relatively rare and thus cooler... it's as simple as
that. But it is a beautiful format and should have replaced
the 7". Instead the 12" replaced the 10"... It's not at all
practical but that only makes it even more beautiful and
more interesting to collect... My most treasured 10" is
Stereolab's "Low Fi", from 1992...

...but everywhere I've looked, it costs more to press 10"s
than 12"s and some places don't do it at all.

I know there's more material used (so our environmentalist
friends will probably be championing it and the wankers in
parliament will put a "non-green" tax of a few quid on every
12", whereas 10" records will get huge subsidies, etc.) but
I think it's due to the cost of the (less popular) equipment
for pressing tens.

I've seen 10s listed as chaeper than 12s in some places, I
think the 12 is a hangover from the LP.

Well, we released a 10" and not a 12" for the look of it,
also used coloured vinyl. I think it's more original that
way...
We didn't pay it.
It ended in the MACBA, here u can see...
Also in a poster, here.
Well, ignore the title of the poster thread. As stated, it
says 12" by mistake...

Yes, I'd really like one of those too. :)

I'm suprised/amazed that I've not seen anywhere with one of
those offering dub plate cutting (although the Vestax cut
discs are nearer to normal lightweight vinyl in terms of
sound quality/durability) for £25-30 per plate.

I think a large indie record store (perhaps operating via
mail order- boomkat perhaps) would quickly recoup the cost
of the machine and make a tidy profit.

distributed

Ha ha ha! I remember reading someone describing the
principle on which this works, about 3 years back. He ended
up by saying something like "If Vestax or any of the other
big names are reading it, feel free to rip my idea off. I
just want to see this thing made."

Looks interesting and I have to respect them taking a chance
on things like this (and the faderboard), they really do
seem to be prepared to lose money (I can't see it selling
many units) just to advance what can be done with DJing
skills. Unless the pitch alteration is digital, I think
there'll always be a slight portamento effect (as the pitch
increases/decreases to the new value). Also, if it's going
to be useable to play real melodies with quick note changes,
it'll need a very loose/free moving fader like the
contactless optical/magnetic ones.

It would be interesting to see someone playing a pair of
these (tuned to different octaves), one controlled by the
pedal, the other by the pitch keys and the other hand
operating the mixer.
