Are we alone in the universe?

A good topic to get peoples opinions on:

ARE WE ALONE? Are there others out there like us? Advanced
races or perhaps primitive ones?

Personally i believe there is. I mean why not? As far as we
know the universe is infinite (~) and even if it isnt its
pretty goddamn big, and odds are there are many other
earth-like planets out there that can support life just as
ours does.

Its almost so possible that the thought of someone thinking
we are alone in the universe is funny. Its amazing how
ignorant people can be, thinking this whole universe is ours
and we are all that lives in it! (No offence to any of you
that do not believe in "aliens").

Please, opinions!

life is unlikely. is there life under the icy surface of
europa? can't wait for that mission to get underway.

hard to say.... the odds were so overwhelmingly small for
life to develop here that it's almost unimaginable that
there should be life anywhere else. but since this galaxy is
pretty big, who knows.

Doesn't matter to me that much - but at a guess i'd say we
aren't alone.

Altho whether it is in the form of a Hollywood alien or just
a life form (whatever the definition of life is?), bacteria,
something quite different to our conceptions of life etc. ?
i wouldn't know .. but i'd probably put more money on the
latter than the former ... but don't exlude either. :)
hehe.. covered all bases there pretty much - except ofcourse
if they don't exist .. hehe

I totally believe that life exsists else where in the
Universe. It's just so damn BIG!

The Mind boggles at the thought at there might not be an end
at all. And even if there is an end it still is massively
huge. But then if the universe did come to a end somewhere
what would be behind it? Why would it just stop there?

Oh dear, the questions! the questions!

The idea that everything exsists just for us doesn't sound
right.

I also find ancient Egypt and Atlantis very fascinating.

And maybe the government does keep stuff from us like on
"The X Files". I'm very interested in Area 51 and stuff like
that.

apparantly Atlantis is situated beneath Antarctica. there
are maps from centuries ago which show the land beneath the
ice, and modern technology has only just been able to
confirm what the maps already state.

The ancient Egyptians had contact with the aliens. The
aliens gave 'm some maps(Antarctica) and
technology(pyramids). But the Egyptians probably did
something terrible to disturb the interspecies-relationship.
And that's why we haven't seen them ever since. I think the
key to finding the aliens is to find out what the Egyptians
did to scare them away. Maybe the aliens have allergies or
something.

There was a story not so long ago that a group of
archaeologists wanted to exacavate under the sphinx where
there appears to be a large vault - but the authorities
wouldn't allow it. Do you think that this just the
'government' from allowing people to get 'too close' to the
truth?

Or it could be like stargate. Aliens came over thousands of
years back and imitated our gods. Most of the ideas about
gods basically say that they came down and they will come
back.

But i do think the government is hiding something.

other planet out of those with intelligent life... or life
of any kind for that matter... so yes, I think there is...

We did this thing in physics based on probability and we
estimated there should be about 1000 other intelligent life
planets, but if they were around we would have seen them by
now I think.

That brings up a question: What's intelligent life. Being
able to cope with your circumstances(like animals, plants)
or being able to communicate with a large number of
words(humans)? Where do we put the threshold?

this? I'm pretty sure it's unanswerable now, but if you had
all the values you could estimate the number of
civilizations in the universe or soemthing...

ya i agree phresch

..i think there is almost certainly a lot of other life out
there.. probably a lot of intelligent life too

but that depends on how we define life, and especially
intelligence

we listen for signals from space all the time, and just cus
we haven't heard anything concrete yet, people assume that
theres nothing out there...

but remember: even one hundred years ago, we weren't able to
send or recieve radio signals.....but we were certainly
intelligent
if there is a civilization like that only one or two stars
away, we would have no way of knowing its there

it could go the other way too:

they could be way PAST radio waves as a means of
communication. im sure WE will be some day... we'll find
some better way of communicating.
if there are aliens out there they might be using some
really advanced (compared to us) form of communication that
we cant even begin to imagine, meaning it would be useless
to listen to radio waves

and even if we did recieve a signal, how could we hope to
understand it?

offline Jedi Chris on 2002-03-10 17:09 [#00119848]
Points: 11496 Status: Lurker

Dictionary.com's definition of the word intelligence...

1.The capacity to acquire and apply knowledge.
2.The faculty of thought and reason.
3.Superior powers of mind.

Do you not think though that we recognise a signal from an
alien species, purely on the basis that we didn't understand
it or were not able to interpret it?

If there was some intelligence higher than ourselves out
there, they would be clever enough not to visit assholes
like humanity. and offcourse there is!!!

it is said, that there is as many stars out there, as there
is sand pellets on the entire earth. and remember, our sun
is a star! with planets as a side thing. so i´d say the
chance is pretty good!!!

i´m also under the belief, that higher evolved individuals,
has no need for a physical body. we need to expand our
reality. because you cant see it, doesnt mean it doesnt
exist!

if there were 1000 other intelligent life cultures, there
still is not much chance that they would meet up with each
other... unless the basics of physics, time, and space can
be broken... civilizations rise and fall in a million years,
maybe seperated by 100 million light years...

i've read that, if you take a liberal assumption of there
being lots of intelligent life in the universe, the odds of
another planet having a spacefaring civilization in our own
galaxy at the same timeframe in history (i.e. while humans
exist like we do now) are not high, maybe one civilization
other than ours in our entire galaxy, and it would be damn
lucky to be within even 1000 light years, which a hell of a
lot of space...

... do you know how long it would take to send humans to
even close stars, within 10 light years? they could spend
the entire GNP of the USA for 10 years, and they still
probably not get a human to the Alpha-centauri in a human
lifetime... i know, it sucks...

I heard of that ubik, but i think the main problem is that
when you think of space travel you think "step into huge
chunk of metal and fly"....

its so primitive!

what about beings with no physical body, that can move with
mind control... also, science is evolving exponentially.
remember how people 100 years ago responded to the idea of
an "airplane".

There MUST be intelligent life somewhere, it's just a matter
of time before we get advanced enough to be able to get in
contact with them.

That could take a LOOOOONNNGGG time... if there is life,
it's pretty damn far away. Sigh, it's frustrating not
knowing, I would be SO excited if they found life somewhere.
Not just single celled assholes, but living, breathing,

when we go to Mars one day just to survey & explore, we
might leave some microorganisms behind when he head back

microorganisms may evolve on Mars through natural selection.

It was mentioned above about stargate, thats not too

Depends what you mean by "we"? Animals?

It's absolutely 100% certain that the universe is teaming
with life, I don't think it's possible that one planet out
of trillions and trillions of planets can sustain life the
others not.

Life as intelligent as humans? I think that's less likely,
but again almost certain to exist. Problem is, not only the
massive distances involved, of which human's probably have
no realistic chance of ever reaching, but also the question
of time. What's the chances of intelligent life not only
existing, but also within the same time period?

For example, life far more intelligent than ours could have
existed 50 billions years ago, 20000 light years away from
us.

So yes, "intelligent" life exists I would imagine, but very
rare - much too far for humans to find for thousands of
years probably, and at time periods completely unequivalent
to ours.
