I think vinyl will become a "collectible novelty", it pretty
much already has.

mp3 will become the new standard audio format, or more
probably an evolved form of mp3, I'd guess. basically, no
more vinyl, no more cd's, just hard, hard drives. or an
evolved form of hard drives.

Vinyl could stay alive a few more years because of
scratching. I've not tried Final Scratch yet but I'm
thinking of getting one so I can scratch my mp3!

i read a review of that, and it said that it wasn't good
enough for scratching, due to latency issues. but i'm not a
dj, and it might have developed in the last few years.

purists who will only/mostly buy vinyl.

Some good points, but this part is incorrect:

"Your average clubber is not a discerning audiophile. And
they’re not only unaware of your medium of choice, they
ultimately don’t really care."

So why do all music videos have a DJ using a pair of Tech
12s rather than a laptop with Traktor? There's no denying
the image of a DJ with turntables is iconic. A nerd hunched
over, squinting at a laptop screen doesn't have the same
aura of cool.

I must agree thought; once there's a cheap, reliable, good
sounding Final Scratch/similar available, vinyl's days
really will be numbered. However, I bet you'll still have a
few audiophile versions of (new) releases coming out on
vinyl and I also bet you'll have people who collect vinyl
still (even if they very rarely actually play it).

its just much more fun with turntables and vinyl! thats why
i keep buying it at least. otherwise i could just download
music.

Don't get me wrong; I love vinyl and scratching and use my
decks almost every day. I maintain that mixing with vinyl is
a lot more skillful and rewarding than using traktor and is
certainly more of a spectacle to watch: Q-bert tearing it up
on turntables or clicking away on a laptop? It's no contest.
It's just that once there's a cheaper/better version of the
final scratch, I really won't be able to justify the cost of
buying 2 copies of a battle record at £30 a time, when I
can DL it for a fraction of the price (or free, if I'm
feeling naughty).

I just read in my local paper that my local record shop is
closing. This is really sad. Apparently it is to due to
declining sales and the interent.
Going to that shop was an experience. They would play music
on the decks and I would hear it and be introduced to new
and wonderous worlds. They could recommend things and you
could talk about everything and anything, the internet just
doesn't compare.
I could walk to the shop, spend a few hours there, walk home
with a reassuringly heavy bag of records, old and new and
play them once I got in. It was something to look forward
to.

Records are real, you can touch them, feel them. mp3 is
vacuous. there is something nice about a record with all its
imperfections, clicks pops, etc.

Record sleeves are wonderful artworks that come free with
the music. 12" x 12" at least, put the good ones on your
wall and admire them.

Newer is not necessarily better. One day I will write my
paper "The falacy that new = better", its things like the
decline of vinyl that 'inspire' me to write it.

It's all very sad, most young kids now just download
everything and have no appreciation, I can only hope that
they get inquisitive and ask mum/dad what those weird black
frisbees are all about and get into records that way.
Sometimes I feel so old...I'm only 21. Sorry if this is
monoid-esque, but I just don't like a lot of the things the
world is doing because it is new and not necessarily better.

A record shop in Cheltenham where I got almost all my
Analords from has got rid of pretty much 9/10 of it.

Combo: I want a vinyl presser, so when I'm a producer.....
lol

Ceri: Yes, that is iconic, and I don't want to get weird
looks when I got my first set... with a laptop

Cunty: It is a lot more fun. Problem is, I never find the
time to do all this.

I don't think it's so much about mp3-technology being new is
what makes it popular, though - I think it's because it's
more convenient for most people.

easy to use, takes little to no space, lots of music on your
iBob, etc.

and you can steal them quite easily too.

not saying I'm a fan of mp3s, neither am I a big fan of
vinyl. mp3s tend to sound shit and you lose the whole
"collection of tracks as an album"-thing. on the other hand,
vinyl is a bit unwieldly and personally I'm just too lazy to
take proper care of vinyl. that said, I do have a small
collection and I'll buy it if there's only vinyl to be had.

I do love recordstores, though. it's a completely different
experience to hold an album in your hands, having a listen
in the store itself. the whole mp3-thing seems to encourage
people to be less appreciative - listening to the first 10
seconds of a track and immediately making up your mind.
there's such a lot on offer and it so easy to get things.

on the other hand, I would've missed out on a shitload of
music I would've never even heard of if it wasn't for the
internet. if you get to know the right people, through
messageboards like these for example, you can get the best
recommendations you could ever hope to find.

it that is still in production/being made is pretty huge
still. There are a ridiculous amount of collectors out

Thats the nature of progress. It doesn't leave much room for
romantics. Not that I don't love playing records, but MP3's
are much easier to deal with.

However, people say the same thing about hardware vs
software synthesizers for a few years, and its two totally
different experiences. I get excited about getting new
hardware. New software is not so much. Physical objects is
less flexible, more expensive, more time consuming, and more
space. Software isn't as fun or expressive. That being said,
I would probly end up buying a copy of bosendorfer before I
bought a grand piano. I love midi too much.

mp3's will be replaced with a format like wav or flac, then
they'll sound good =p but you'll always be able to buy a
physical representation of it tho.

look at books, they were to disapear if we had to believe
what was said 10-15 years ago, when cd-rom technology was
growing.
they are still around and nobody would say it is the same to
read on a computer screen and reading with the book in you
hand.

as for vinyl, i'm just sad Man can't come up with a viable
alternative, because i'm sure technicaly speaking we could
build an analog medium that is cheaper/smaller/better/last
longer than vinyl records, but it's not like it would be a
gold-mine...

But seriously, every single one of my DJ/producer friends I
spoke to said that the vinyl market is dying to the point
where its just not even profitable to press to it anymore.
Its a real shame, as I love the format and still buy vinyl
every week.

I also sense that the digital market will become the leader
in the next 5-10 years. The iPod boom and general rise in
MP3 players will of course account for this, and in
fairness, it is very cool to have a digital archive of all
your music.

But vinyl has died once already. It was the electronic music
scene which revived it. Maybe there is life left in the old
dog yet...

and crackles they bring to the sound, but then again - I
could only buy the original basic channel stuff by buying
12" records... (I record them straight to computer first

If the material are availble on beatport as wav, I buy it

I got to say all you vinyl-lickers sound so daft to me,
just face the fact that you like vinyl because its different
and youre used to it. I mean dave g says vinyl is better
because it has crackles and pops, and big pretty pictures
with it, and cause you can go into the shops and chat about
it... these are valid reasons for liking vinyl but they
definetly dont make it better.

mp3s dont take up any space, theyre cheap, you can dj with
them without having to spend fuck loads on records every
week, the quality is sufficient and can easily be as good,
and yes Traktor is easy to use. I honestly dont think any
replacement format would please you folks, youre welcome to
enjoy vinyl but do you really believe its actually superior?
