The death of vinyl ?

vinyl, in terms of sound quality, is vastly superior to
mp3s.

mp3s also contribute to the "oh, I'll put it on random" ADHD
culture where anyones attention span is less than 5 seconds
no matter what the subject is.

CAPS

also i agree with Drunken about this ADHD culture. Im far
more likely to listen to an entire side of vinyl then i am
to listen to the same tracks on my computer. the selection
process is entirely different for me when it comes to
choosing something on a physical medium to listen to. with
mp3s i just think oh that track has nice bass ill stick
that on for a minute
whereas with CDs or Vinyl i only
listen to albums that i actually enjoy the majority of.

yeah these days its like a lot of people seem to be seduced
by the 'quick and easy' option. the same is happening with
digital cameras. its too funny - you can buy a new digi cam
for about £200 (for an alright one) and it still wont beat
the quality of your 30 year old Olympus film camera sat in
the attic.

if there were any vinyl records within 10 miles of here
besides my dad's old styx records, i might use vinyl, but
sadly in america it seems there isn't a question about the
death of vinyl, it has already happened. the only places i
know of that still stock vinyl are downtown, but it's all
just original pressings of rock from the 60's and 70's. it's
sad being a fan of electronic music in america, because no
one else is.

I think CD's (stands for compact disc) are gonna replace
vinyl. You can have up to about 75 minutes of audio, so they
can be used for singles and full-length albums. One of the
main bonuses is that you don't have to turn the record over
half way through.
I know a fella that's got "Brothers in Arms" by Dire Straits
on CD, and he says the fidelity is awesome. Apparently next
year's NOW 5 chart compilation is going to be issues on
compact disc too.

same goes for plasma and lcd television sets.. me and a mate
were trying to find him a decent normal flat (erh.. is it
called image-tube in english?) tv, but all they sell is the
plasma and lcd crap which costs ten times as much and that
has.. well, even the 50000,- lcd has worse images than a new
3000,- cheap-ass picture tube set

I would love a midi controlled turntable. Where it memorizes
the record and you could cutup and do crazy stuff with a
sequencer. I think records have a cool sound that can not be
done in the computer.

I think all these new digital DJing technologies encourage
too much arsing around. I like it when a DJ just drops
awesome tunes with a little bit of mixing to pep it up a
bit. I don't wanna hear millions of edits and bootlegs.

the fact that analog is dying will never mean that digital
will be better. digital is always gonna be a sampled analog
signal. anyone who doesnt understand this owes it to
themselves to do a tiny bit of research.

That's what I mean, it's already full of edits anyway, why
ruin it with even more and "Push It" or "Get your Freak on"
plastered over the top? Of course I'm not completely against
remixes and edits, but you've gotta let the music breath a
bit.
My mate does a beat perfect mash up of LFO's "Freak" and Les
Rythym Digitales' "Disco to Disco" with a cheap old pair of
decks and a couple of worn twelves.

I used to have tons of arguments back in the day about vinyl
vs. CD. Vinyl zelots who flame me for saying CD was better.

But as the mastering houses will tell you vinyl is a
sensitive medium and certain frequencies have to be dropped
before a track can be laid on it.

i know i know the quality of vinyl is technically so much
better... I just frankly dont give a shit, and neither does
most anyone else, especially when DJing. Medium quality mp3s
sound fine, and lossless formats exist too if you insist on
being really fussy

And if you cant listen to a full album then thats your own
fault, I manage fine.

if it dies it will be because it's gonna be very very
expensive to make. make someone will find a new material to
record music in the same way?

this all depends upon ones definition of 'death'.

is death defined when the media is no longer available, full
stop, or it's only used by a very small minority versus
being the more dominant format? if the latter, i'd argue
that our music tastes fit into that anyway, so it's probably
not really going to affect us. i don't give a shit if the
top 100 isn't available on vinyl, but i do care if
electronica is, and i don't see that going away anytime
soon.

now, the death of cd's; that might happen.

infact all my mixes are recorded on cd,meaning the vinyl
quality is lost anyway.
and all the final scratch djs i know dont even use flacs
they use mp3,and nobody ever notices.

Records have one thing which mp3 can never replace....
The whole experience.

Going into the shop, digging through crates, finding and
listening to a brilliant record.
Pay for it, put it in bag, leave shop.
Go home, with the knowledge that there is an amazing record
in your bag waiting to be played at full volume....
Finally get home, cut the shrinkwrap, slide it out of the
shiny new sleeve.
Remove record in mint condition, notice the hermetically
sealed conditions and the smell of 'newness'.
Put it on turntable, volume up, sit back, hit start, enjoy.

The knowledge that there is a brilliant record in your bag
and once you get home you can play it is fantastic, it's
like musical foreplay.

And finally, what looks more impressive, wall to wall record
collection or mp3 playlist on a screen?

but the world is leaving vinyl behind and it will/and is
starting to get replaced.
now come on,lets go thru it all again.

exactly, i just need to buy a new turntable. This old one

There will always be a market for vinyl. There are still
people producing music on four track casettes. Catering to
ludites is far too profitable. It just will be a lot more
expensive.

Everybody thought that analogue synthesizers would be killed
by digital synthesizers. People are still making analogue
synthesizers. They are just really expensive.

mp3s/flacs cant exist without an original source though. and
until this changes or record companies distribute releases
as mp3s with no alternative then vinyls and cds wont die.

yeah, exactly. there's no doubt record stores have a harder
time these days, and that's something i'll severely miss if
it gets to a point where the only ones around cater to more
popular tastes.

most people prefer instant gratification, it seems, over
pretty much everything.
