I can also recommend Charlie Brooker's Screenwipe, which aired on BBC 4 and had him reviewing television - individual programmes, but also general trends in tv.
very funny. 3 episodes, downloadable in one go from UKNova.

if I could, I would - sadly (but also happily) UKNova doesn't work with invites.
you just need to get lucky.. have the registration page as your home, for example.

I was a bit disappointed, it's a bit of a step back from The Day Today level of madness. I did quite like the digs at "I Love 1993" type soundbite programmes, the disection of the opening sequence of Top of the Pops² was inspired, "Grey on white. The 2 in orange. Classic". And, as noted, Stewart Lee is gold.
Wrong thread but I just watched the last two episodes of Saxondale. Best comedy for a long, long time, too many classic moments to take on board, and will be enjoyed over and over again.
I heard over the end credits mention of a Rob Brydon show "Annually Retentives"? Is that any good?

Yeah it is funny, not amazing but if you like coogan you'll like it. Its sort of a comedy panel quiz show but also a 'rob brydon is a self important twat' alan partridge style thing.

I was a bit disappointed too. somehow the whole "we're in the future looking back" feels like a bit of a cheat, for some strange reason.
and the thing with the "I love"-soundbite thing is, he had already done the exact same thing on that "2004: The Stupid Version" one hour special he did for BBC 3 (or 4, can't remember) last year. in fact - he used the exact same "celebrity guests". so that feels a bit recycled. (I think the Stupid Version thing has been reseeded over at UKNova recently, btw, I can recommend that one!)
Saxondale was absolutely brilliant. I loved it!
I have only seen three episodes of the new Rob Brydon thing and gave up. I really hated it. it has the same fault that "A cock and bull story" has - being post-modern for the sake of being post-modern.
basically each episode goes like this - production team says who they'd like to invite for the show, one by one Brydon will say he hates them, in the form of a rickety oneliner. production team says "we have an idea for a game", Brydon says "ooh that's a ripoff of [insert name of tv show here]". and so on.
then the whole thing is intercut with the gameshow, but this doesn't do anything for either the narrative OR the tension.
I always feel that when you do the self-referential/post-modern thing it should be to create some kind of friction between the two "worlds" (the real world and the gameshow world, in this case) - a scene in the real world will function as a kind of comment on a following scene in the gameshow world, etc. not in this programme.

I love the way that, because it's set in future, they've made Stewart Lee all old and pudgy and grey. It looks really realistic.

it doesnt stand up to a lot of scrutiny, and it is essentially a one trick pony but it made me laugh a few times each episode. And the cutting between the two parts is very odd, as if they were trying to do something clever but it ends up just being a bit wtf

I've not seen that 2004 Stupid Version, I will grab that, soon as I can rejoin UKNova.. I had high hopes for Trumpet as well after the genius of Charm Offensive. This Trumpet thing suffers from dragging stuff out too much. On The Day to Today the thing about Charlotte Church vomitting herself inside out would have just been mentioned in a "Coming up" headline at the begining and probably not mentioned again. And the cut up of Brown's speech was very laboured (no pun) in comparison with Chris Morris's great work in that field. But, early days, it may well pick up.

yep. you saw it especially well in the episode with David Walliams getting "angry" - if I remember correctly you know he's not going to do the show early in the programme, but the actual way they get to that point, how Walliams is handled, isn't interesting or surprising at all. just kind off.. well, boring. made me go "yes..?" and then the programme ended.
