**SPOILER ALERT!!!!*****
I think Roland got what he deserved in the end. If you look at the path behind him and the events that occurred in Dark Tower, as well as the NIN-quote at the book's preface, Roland is a sympathetic character, but he also puts all things aside in search of his precious tower. So, in the end, are you truly surprised?
**spoiler alert!!!!!!!!!********

i think i started reading the series in high school, with the original Gunslinger book. (i have a copy somewhere, and someone is borrowing it, so it's probably gone along with my copy of Susannah's Song) I actually skipped Wizard in Glass like an idiot, then went ahead and read Wolves of the Calla, so I had to backtrack later, then I read Susannah's Song.
But it is definitely one of my favorite series - IF NOT MY FAVORITE.

******SPOILERS*********
I'm still not sure about the end. the fact that he now has the horn to me suggests that its not en endless loop (ka is a wheel) but has an actual end which we will never find out about. I kinda think he should have died atop the tower myself.
I dunno it's still sinking in

Read them all a couple of months ago and LOVED them.
A note to all who would read the series: Steve Roach's ambient album "Midnight Moon" is the PERFECT soundtrack to these books, with the occasional switch to Lustmord or Tomas Koner for the darker parts.
***spoilers*** I liked the end. The horn is the key and it is my theory that the Gunslinger forsakes the Tower on this, his last run through, by saving Jake in the mines rather then letting him fall. Roland blowing the Horn for himself IS the Tower, and the Tower always has been Redepmtion.
What I did not like about the last book was Flagg's demise. He was never really a "central" character in this series as he was in The Stand, Eye Of The Dragon etc, but if this was his Death of all Death's I think we deserved to see a little better then such a quick and somewhat contrived offing from Mordred.
For my money, Wizard And Glass was the best book of the series and the best Stephen King book I've read yet.

***********SPOILERS**********
I saw the repetition more as meaning that the cycle "is" the tower. in a sense Roland is the lynch pin to existence if ya ken me.
I loved the whole series, not sure i can pick a favourite as i read them straight one after the other and they have all merged in my head. Although the first does stand out to me.
I did dislike the whole "Stephen King" bit (The Writter). I found it kinda reminded me i was reading a book which spoilt the atmosphere and it seemed some what pompous to give himself such a hig seated role as gan's mouth piece.
As for Flag's death, i liked it although it kinda left me thinking it was a shame Roland didn't get the kill.
I thought the crimson king was kinda weak, for such a powerful thing the fact that he only had sneeches was kinda lame. You'd think he'd have some wizardly powers, it seemed Flag was more powerful than the king himself.
I still can't decide about the end. I think i am just pissed off that Jake and Oy died, i really had it set in my head that it would be Jake to climb the tower not Roland. Although when Eddie and Jake were brothers in the alternate new york i got a bit emotional (emo).
My heads a'spinning indeed.

Yeah, I've watched the Sergio Leone movies (Good Bad & The Ugly etc) awhile before I read these books, I most definatly had Clint Eastwood in mind as Roland.
***spoilers*** I :loved: having Stephen King insert himself into the story. Those parts were so awsome to read. I especially loved the journal he put in back of Song Of Susannah. Just look at it this way: In Roland's world the Tower is the Tower. In *Our* world (or the keystone world as he called it) Stephen King is the tower and we get the story through him. I know it's not for everyone but I found that to be an awsome dynamic.
Read his OTHER Dark Tower connected books (Salem's Lot, Hearts in Atlants, It, The Stand, Insomnia, Eyes of the Dragon, Rose Madder, Desperation, The Regulators, and even a few more that arent coming to mind), and someday come back and re-read these last three, and you might appreciate what he was trying to do here a little more.
You have to remember that the Crimson King was trapped outside the Tower (physically and symbollically, and when you think about it all the tower was symbolism anyway) he was lucky he even had access to the Sneetches. His Breaker plan failed (the showdown at Algul Siento was the best part of book 7) and he ran off to the Tower on his own as a last attempt sort of thing, in many ways digging his own grave before Roland even got there.
What WAS contrived about that whole part was Patrick Danville coming into the story at a very opportune time, but if you read "Insomnia" you will give him a lot more credibilty, as he and the crimson king are tied into that book further.
The ending itself was great. It's open to interpertation, as many of King's endings are. I love that about his work, but I can see why that would piss some people off if you have to have closure.

i got to admit, baring the stand and kingdom hospital (i loved thats eries), i am not huge a king fan, but dark tower is genuinly a great piece of work. an epic masterpiece and as king said himself its not in the ending its in the journey and i can't fault that at all.

I've read 90% of his work, and pretty awesome how everything is interconnected. I can't help hating the book 7 and 6 though (5 was pretty meh too), it feels like he got real bored and pulled some silly trick on his readers by writing himself into it. *SPOILER* the way flagg dies is so pathetic, and mordreds demise makes everything he's been building up to totally pointless. The vamp is pretty okay in my book, and so is the young boy they rescue near the end, but..
kinda weak. i agree that its more about the journey, but it could have been better imo
my 2 cents.
