Interesting site, although it links to freakish neo-prophecy cult. 1) since every childbirth carries the risk of mother dying, not to mention the 9-month strain on her physique, at least in cases of rape and incest there is a very weak case to be made for the immorality of abortion. Even then (see point 2), the argument from humanity overrides this fact after a certain stage, and one cannot make a child guilty of his father's or mother's deeds, pre- or post-natal. 2) People often have very vague notions of what developing fetuses can feel or think - for obvious reasons. The science seems to point to certain facts about the nervous system, such as the fact that only after 2 or 3 months there is any major nervous activity conducive to "sensory" cognition. Skin sensitivity develops from about 8 weeks on. There's considerable debate about most theories surrounding all this. The argument on that site, however, that appearance of a human leads to a proof of "feelings" of "thoughts" remains unproven. I would think abortion after the first few weeks (4-8?) remains controversial for a reason. Like Chihiro pointed out, extremism rarely leads to solutions, and instead alienates people from another. |
