Specs

The "***" is a monophonic analog synthesizer, with 100
user editable presets.

Synth Engine:
Sound Sources are two ultra-stable analog VCOs. Parameters
for the VCOs are:
- Osc. 1 Octave: 16¡¦, 8¡¦, 4¡¦, 2¡¦
- Osc. 1 Wave: Continuously variable from triangle through
saw and square to skinny pulse.
- Osc. 1 Level
- Glide Rate
- Osc. 1„³ 2 Sync On/Off
- Osc. 2 Frequency
- Osc. 2 Octave: 16¡¦, 8¡¦, 4¡¦, 2¡¦
- Osc. 2 Wave: Continuously variable from triangle through
saw and square to skinny pulse.
- Osc. 2 Level
- Fine Tune (for both Oscillators, located at the bottom
left of the panel)

Sound Modifiers include a single VCLPF: 24 dB /Oct Moog
Ladder filter, with filter Overload control and a single
Output VCA. Filter parameters are:
Cutoff
Resonance
Kb. Control Amount (how much the Key CV modulates the
Filter)
Filter Env. Amount (how much +/- the filter envelope
modulates the filter)
Overload
An Envelope Generator section provides two ADSR EGRs: one to
modulate the Filter (Filter EGR) and one to modulate the VCA
(Volume EGR). For each EGR, the parameters are:
Attack
Decay
Sustain
Release

The Modulation section contains a 4-waveform LFO, and a 1x1
Mod Buss with 6 possible mod sources and 4 possible
destinations. Its parameters are:
LFO Rate
Mod Source: (LFO triangle, LFO square, LFO sawtooth, LFO
ramp, Filt. EGR, and Osc. 2
Mod Amount (the amount of modulation w/ the mod wheel all
the way forward)
Mod Destination (Pitch, Osc. 2, Filter, Wave)

As far as I am concerned, I didn't feel $3000us was worth it
for the moog sound, but $1500 is.

I don't completely understand the hardware implementation of
the ladder filter - in Reaktor you can use just the 2 pole
output, or a mix of 2 and 3 pole, for example, and modulate
the cutoff and resonance separately. In a hardware moog, can
you also do that?

Not sure. With todays technology, you can pretty much do
everything you can with hardware than you can with software.
It just gets more expensive/time + space consuming.

I don't think software will ever replace hardware synths.
There will always be people claiming it doesn't sound the
same. Even when it does.

Moog synth for everyone then...

Well, comparitively. Aparently it has endless knobs, with 15
LEDs around them to show where the knobs are positioned.
Thats about as sexy as it comes.

You see, when you buy one of these moogs, you are buying a
lifetime of SEX. Seeing as some people are willing to pay
$300 for an hour of sex, $1500 for a lifetime is quite a
bargain.

for me.

It could have 50 LEDS round it for all I care. I'll wiat
until I've heard it before I get too excited. That siad, I
am excited.

Yeah. Well, I am definately not sold on the moog sound as
much as some people. The voyager costs as much as an
andromeda, which is a polysynth with more modulation options
than just about anything else out there.

But there is also the quality that goes behind moog
synthesizers. I have never heard anybody complain about
something not working on their voyager, or anything else
about them for that matter. When you look at some $1000 and
$2000 pieces of gear that I hear constant complaints about,
I think the extra money is partly for piece of mind, and
reputation. That being said, the evolver is at least as much
of a synthesizer if not more than the voyager, and its a
sixth of the price. As well, the akai mpc line of samplers
is probly one of the most problematic of hardware gear, and
I still swear by my MPC1k.

I've heard bad things about the Andromeda - the envelopes
aren't so hot, the sound is cold, the OS is buggy, there
isn't enough horsepower in it to process the routings and
effects and so on...

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2006-03-24 19:21 [#01866994]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker | Followup to fleetmouse: #01866990

Yeah, I have heard a couple bad things too. Not about the
sound being cold, but the OS being somewhat buggy. Although
all the examples I could find were for things that most
people including myself won't use.

Some people are so particular over their envelopes. A lot of
people complain about the envelopes on the evolver too. I
think they are fine.

Personally, I think its people paying a lot of money for
something that they ended up not liking, so they went out
and found a bunch of little things to complain about. The
fact that its by alesis doesn't win it any points either.

Well, if Alesis managed the Ion to sound huge then the
Andromeda should have a massive sound.
And the Ion's OS is buggy, but it's also hilarious, lol

I was debating whether to get the sh5 or an odyessey.
Everyone that used both said to get an sh5. I have no
interest in new synths. I want to get an old prophet sampler
next and a tape delay a 909 an 808. I don't need any more
synths for now. Well, maybe a 101. I giess I do like the
rolands. Can't afford the ems's and moogs.

Hmmm. Well, the prophet 2000 goes for about $150 lately that
I have seen. It looks really nice. Personally, I find a lot
fo the classic synthesizers to problematic and non-midi
compatible, but eventually I am going to get bored of really
expensive VA and start collecing the old analog mono and
polys.

CVto midi converter or a sequencer like a mobius work. It's
always a risk that old analogues can break. Thats the risk
you take.

looking into having him build one for me. I want to design
the interface. |)
