[Exquisite Corpse] General Midi Corpse

YOYOYOYO!

It's time for a new exquisite corpse, and this time, it's
the General Midi Exquisite Corpse! In other words, the
restriction will be to that EVERYTHING must be sequenced
using midi, and all instruments must come from the General
Midi soundset of your synth or computer. This time, it will
be started simultaneously on two forums, so there will
(hopefully) be a mix of people from here and there doing
it.

What is this?
Well.. I had this idea.. get several music-makers
together and make a track. Each will make their part (one to
bass, one to melody, and so-on) without listening to the
others' part. A BPM and maybe a theme or scale is decided
beforehand, and when everyone is finished, it is mixed by
one of the participants or preferrably a person that only
does mix.

The general idea for the tracks is that they're supposed to
be as spontaneous as possible, which means it would be
preferrable for them to be done within an hour or two
(including the process of getting artists), so don't sign up
unless you have the time.

Exquisite Corpse

BPM: 96
Scale: C major (C, D, E, F, G, A, H)

Melody: -
Comp: -
Bass: -
Drums: -
Sounds: -
Mix: -

so sign up NOW!

oh, hang on.. I just got another idea!

what if there is no audio file at the end of this, just a
midi file? It'll use the midi devices of the person
listening, which would make the song slightly different from
person to person! in that case, people would have to just
sequence it, export the midi and mail it to the mixer, who'd
have the job of putting it all together and maybe assign
instruments! how does that sound?

Sounds like something I can't do at work...
But a good idea.
Shit, I got to get a home connection. I'm losing all the
fun...

Ummm. there is a way to cheat this. Make a soundfont, load
it into the general midi bank of your computer...

Wait a second. Just read your second post.

That sounds like fun. Makes the mixers job that much more
difficult tho.

more difficult? isn't putting midi together quite easy?

anyway, you want to do a part?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2006-02-17 03:35 [#01842986]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

Hmmm. Maybe the bassline.

I am getting an akai s950 this weekend (hopefully) I want to
show it off. Could I make a beat or something in that and
just say that its made with general midi???

you could try, but if the second idea is good, there won't
be any audio, just midi files, so you'd have to make the
beat and then export it to midi somehow... hahah...

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2006-02-18 17:32 [#01844258]

Its easy. Just write something in cubase or flp, and export:
midi file. Even if you use the most sophisticated synths, it
will still be read by the mixers computer as gm.

yeah, but the thing is, the result will be just midi, and no
audio... however, I'm not sure if it's such a good idea,
seeing as no-one can do it...

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2006-02-18 18:48 [#01844318]
Points: 9958 Status: Lurker

The way general midi works is most soundcards have a
soundfont loaded as default general midi bank. You can make
your own soundfont and use whatever sounds you want, say use
an 808 kit for the drums and a bunch of 303 samples with
varying resonace on the filters for the rest.

I have no idea, but finale notepad is a free music notation
software thingie.. you can't export to midi in that program,
but I have the full finale 2006, so I could convert the .mus
files and send them on to oyvinto.
