Aside from probably Pietrobot, has anyone signed on for this? To be fair, I think Grooves has done wonders for getting electronic music out there in another format. I was sad to hear they were moving away from print.
Anyways, I unsuccessfully tried to pick up a hardcopy of the last issue that also was free online. Since I couldnt find it, I downloaded the online version. I understand this is the first one, but I have to say aside from the color pics, it was rather uninvigorating. It was difficult to read, the highlights were for the first time about people I could care less about, the gear was all shit I wouldnt use, and the reviews were cut down so short that there was no possibility for serendipitous discovery (as was the case for every issue before this).
Like I said, I am sure they are ironing out the kinks, but this isnt really convincing me to sign up for the online service. I feel like I would have to see or hear about a couple more "issues" before I signed up. There is something to be said about flipping through a magazine while you are standing in line waiting to buy the actual thing. I also dont understand why its still only 4 issues now that it is digital. I thought cutting out print costs / time and having things readily available digitally, would expedite things, save time, and allow for more content.
Anyways, let me reiterate that Grooves is a valuable resource and has done a wonderful job of legitimizing experiemental electronic music in many formats. Albeit a bit disappointed, I am still curious to see where this goes.
Opinions?

obviously it means that electronic music is fake music and groove smag has tricked people into thinking otherwise.

Well it was the only comprehensive publication on music more like what is discussed here. From what I understood, they had an active presence in the real world and now online I guess. Also, they did well to establish associations between contemporary design and electronic music, as was seen on by the layout of the magazine and guest cover artists, etc.
I just thought it was a (nearly) complete package in a rather vague and under-represented genre of music and culture.

hey gl0tch,
thanks for the feedback. let me try to hit the points you make one by one.
1) we unfortunately didn't get a lot of specific pre-production help from the online publisher we're using so while we tried to increase the font size over print, etc., it still came out a little small. we'll try to tweak it for next time.
2) the reason we are doing four 2006 issues is because i'm expeciting my third child any day now and i have a day job that obviously demands attention. i hope that we can increase frequency in 2007.
3) in terms of reviews being cut down, i don't think people would want 100+ reviews crammed onto digital "pages" like we did with print. so most new reviews are being posted daily, for free, on the groovesmag.com site. instead, i decided we should do review columns that would be more readable for the digital issues.
believe me, i'm doing my best to make the next issue even better. i know it's a new medium and it's obviously just not the same as print. but this was the best way to keep grooves and its mission around. i hope you can have a little patience.
thanks sean groovesmag.com

Thanks Sean. Congrats on the kid btw. Obviously that takes precedence above all else. Again, I think Grooves is very special. I appreciate your hard work.
I wasnt aware of the daily reviews. This makes me happier. Anyway you will post the Table of Contents on the new issues to the general public before they are offically uploaded?

yeah, we even have an rss feed if you want to be updated on new reviews. we'll have a new version of the site up soon so it will be more obvious that new reviews are appearing.
and i always try to let people know what the ToC of new issues is.
