Maybe it's me who is weak at mixing with such software but I think that the mix quality is far less good than with turntables !! What do you think ?

I mean... the problem probably comes from the DJ mixer. It's more instinctive to turn knobs than to click on a mouse.

I know it's possible to connect a DJ mixer to a computer, but is it really worth it ?? A normal DJ mixer and two decks are just perfect.

Thats not so much of a dj mixer as it is a Midi controller geared towards the computer dj market, so it wins in a couple areas: under $200, has easy assign features, and isn't going to run you back an additional $2000 for good tables, and uncounted ammounts of money for rare records. The benefits to computer mixing, is it allows you to seamlessly integrate four virtual decks together with added effects and a multitude of other software options. As well, you don't need to cart around a couple crates of rare vinyl that could get lost/stolen/damaged.
Personally, I lean towards hardware for both djing and musicmaking, but there are plenty of good arguments for software.

I find Ableton Live great. It has so many capabilities and everything fits together. I'm shite at using real decks but software makes it a LOT easier for me.

Traktor is a doddle. If you can't get decent sounding mixes out of that, you've got no chance with proper (vinyl) turntables. It doesn't take much skill to sort your mp3s by bpm then autosync the next record. Yes, you still have to choose the next record, but that is a selector, not a DJ (still an important skill, just not the whole package).
I'm not dead against it. I can see the attraction in the version of traktor that comes with final scratch. I even use traktor from time to time and have used it as part of a rig when playing out. It's just that if all you can do is use traktor, you're not a DJ (IMO of course).

You don't get it ! I have no problem beatmixing 2 records with 2 decks and a DJ mixer, but I have problems to do this with traktor cause sometimes it's just not precise enough and sometimes it unexplicably doesn't match the beats for a long time and I have to synchronize them several times.
The main problem I was talking about is ajusting the levels (bass/high) and upfaders. It's just not easy and precise with software and mouse clicks !!

I agree that "nudging" records that are pitched to the same bpm, but that have fallen sligtly out of synch (esp tracks with a real drummer) sounds a lot less natural with traktor as it sort of snaps back into time.

I'd say that some control surface with knobs and buttons is an absolute necessity with Traktor. I mostly use it as a third deck along with the turntables - good stuff

Anyone that runs with the "Traktor does all the beatmatching for you" argument against mp3 DJing must be using some special version that I'm not - it's much, much more work to beatmatch with software than it is on Vinyl. With records I can have everything locked in hardly any time at all, but with traktor it always gets the BPM wrong and I spend ages fiddling with the pitch control and clicking the 'pitch jibble' button when what I really want to be doing is playing with the EQ and cutting in and out of the two records.

Real dj's use music. It doesn't matter about what format they use, or how its beatmatched. If a dj is playing the crowd, and the crowd feels it then they are good.

My point is not the eternal debate vinyls VS digital ! I just wanted to point out that mixing with software is hard due to the lack of knobs, which are more instintive to use imo.

Well....Digital mixing suxxx in my opinnion. It is not an art anymore when you use autosync and mp3 or other digital formats and watching someone clicking a mouse is not so good as real vinyl-turntable action. What`s more when you play something like digeridoo from mp3 it is not considered as something amazing but when you play that from lp people think "where tha fuck he got that record!!". Also don`t you think that liveshows from many warp artist play on DJ tracktor suck? Where is the magic of oldschool hardware action?
