i took me a little time to see how successful it would be.
it really doesn't work like it's supposed to. they claim that they analyze tracks for rhythm, harmony, melody and so on, so that the program will select songs not based on "genre" so much (since one artist might record tracks in numerous styles, with pandora you'd hypothetically get tracks that possess qualities you prefer based on the feedback you give the program rather than just any track by the same artist). fact is, if you put in "lucifer sam" by pink floyd (which came out in 1967 and sounds nothing like seventies classic rock) you get an awful parade of seventies classic rock with no connections. if you put in one funky song by earth, wind and fire you get a stream of generic easy listening r'n'b.
that said, there is a lot of music on there. it played three different tracks by william basinski, and brian eno's "discreet music" in all its 30+ minute glory.

i've made other stations also, that example was just from the "rock" station.
so far i've not heard anything that i've liked enough to buy that i didn't already own.
i'm still listening pretty regularly though.
with so many legitimate and illegitimate, free sources of music on the interweb though pandora just seems like another face in the crowd (which may explain the lack of response to this thread).

how do they get away with copyright issues? is it because it's a non-profit radio station or something?

they have a license of some kind. if you try to skip a lot of tracks (on the free version only i think) it will tell you that a restriction on their license only allows you to skip so many tracks per hour.

wow, I typed in "gridlock" and got jack squat. You'd think the grandfathers responsible for the facilitation of the evolution of industrial music would be in there somewhere. Lame.

It's interesting this thread appears today, as coincidentally I've just learned about it from an outside source. Unless this girl who hates electronica has actaully been spying on me at this messageboard, saw this thread first, and then rushed to tell me about it. hey, it could happen.
but yeah, I searched aphex twin, got some saw II tracks, a nice brian eno piece, and then a a whole bunch of shitty boom tss boom tss techno. ah well, that website's still a good try... and there were a couple nice tunes I had never heard before up there, so props for that.
