Netlabels-How Do I Get Signed?

Hi,
This is probably one of the most stupid questions ever asked
in the history of xl but:
How do I get signed to a netlabel?
I mean, should I just email them a demo straight away or do
I have to wait until one comes over to me?

Step 1. Join an electronic music based message board and ask
quesitons like "I'm trying to do an IDM style track, what do
you suggest I do?"

Step 2. Do about 150 of these tracks, basically pads and cut
up breaks.

Step 3. Pick the best 90 tracks and call it your first EP.

Step 4. Randomly pick any net label.

Step 5. Let's say, for the sake of argument, Force Kitty
"sign" you.

Step 6. They release your album for free on the Internet.

Step 7. You and two of your closest friends download it.

Step 8. Start work on new "ep"

Step 9. Repeat process until the Internet fails under the
weight of net-only IDM releases.

I haven't read this before and I guess it's somewhat of a
cliche now, but whereas Andy Warhol said everybody would be
famous for 15 minutes, now everybody is famous to 15 people.
I thought that was good.

then you'd be better off printing up some cds of your own
and distributing them to local record stores, and normal
record companies/labels/whatever.. try student radios,
leaving "promotional copies" at hip trendy places where
people wear pink blazers (no, wait.. don't do that)...
that'll get you known way faster than a net-label.

yeah, im tryin to get on some random finnish guy's net label
at the moment - its difficult. just burn some of your crap
and flog it to local shops. ive tried that recently - no
feedback yet, but its probably the best way to get known etc

haha, even cx got on a netlabel!

although, admittedly, his release wasn't bad, production
definitely needed work though, didn't feel polished.

everyone and their mother is starting up a netlabel these
days. let out one of those twee, high-pitched farts and
there's a new netlabel.

but seriously folks, isn't it just insanity when people
start fretting about getting signed to a label that
basically consists of a website and some serverspace to host
a zipped up bag of mp3s on?

is the self-importance that quite a lot of netlabels (not
all!) seem to revel in really that seductive?

Surely being on a netlabel is much the same as getting your
own webspace and putting your tracks there and spamming
them?

The only difference is that with a netlabel you don't pay
for serverspace as some kind soul is doing it for you.

Stop being so damn cheap and get your own website.

http://www.themusicoffutureimage.com is availabe.

godaddy.com

Domain registration and hosting.

Sorted.

Saying that netlabels are just serverspace is like saying
that a record label is just someone who loans you money to
produce your cd's. A good netlabel will go out of its way to
help promote you. They will also help you get a good artist
to do album design and such. Certain netlabels are regular
spots that commercial label people go to to listen to new
music. But netlabeling for the sake of netlabeling is lame.

The end result isn't very rewarding in the end I feel.
Maybe a few digits to the "hits" of your site or something.

But it's a far cry from driving to a vinyl pressing plant
and getting music put on a 12".

i stopped reading this after the 4th negative reply.

find net labels you like, and fit your style. go to their
contact info section, and see if they accept demos, if so,
send them.

Only way to get heard, is to make an effort for people to
hear you. Itd be nice if people came knocking on your door,
but its not very realistic.

As if anyone asks for advice on here actually wanting...
advice. The only answer FutureImage wanted in this thread
was "Hi, I'm Brad Boythirst, I run AutoM8 Digital Slump and

me...if you can make money from a netlabel you've got it
made.
