Does anyone else have this piece of equipment!? it is
perhaps the greatest thing I've come across - it's almost as
if it were custom made for me. it's intense

my friends brother has it

Yeah. KP2 = Uproarious fun for the whole gang.

My problems with it are more studio related. Automations and
saved settings are hard to do, so it ends up being a lot of
notetaking. It would also be nice if you could save and load
the two samples from compact flash or something equivalent.

Otherwise, great piece of gear. Well worth the price of
admission :)

just googled it, that thing looks pretty niftical but I've
never seen one in a store, much less played around with one.
:(

Hmmm. Maybe ask the staff at the nearby gear retailer. They
are always in high demand, so the stores usually try to keep
them in stock. Before christmas, they will probly start
displaying one.

Its fun sampling your voice or something, and then
scratching it out overtop of a beat

I've got a KP1. Good fun. I'd not use it on a studio track,
but for playing live they're a good laugh. The large number
of effects included means they're good for an "all in one"
fx box for djing. A pair of electribes, mixer with filters
and a Kaoss pad = comparatively cheap and fairly versatile
"live" setup for most techno styles. I'm still thinking
about getting a sampler (dunno whether to go for an
electribe sampler or a cheaper mpc), so that I'll be able to
do complete tracks on nothing but them.

I'm also looking at other ways to use it as a midi
controller (having seen the NI Tim Exile video). In the past
I've used it in midi mode to control cutoff and resonance on
an audiorealism bassline and that was really good (one
handed acid- so you can use the other to change
patterns/tweak another parameter).

Ceri - if you're looking for a phrase sampler type of thing,
don't overlook the Roland SP808 EX. It's a fairly underrated
machine and they go really cheaply on eBay nowadays.

IMO:

If you are looking for something for a live setup, then the
SP808 that manicminer suggested is a good choice. Aparently,
it has practically everything, each different thing they
have are very limited. Used as a live instrument, its
supposed to come together very well.

For both live and studio, then I would suggest a mpc1000.
With the new OS, it should more than equals the mpc2kxl at
half the cost and size.

I would suggest against the electribe sampler. They seem
good and tight and all, but arent comparable the mpc.

Thanks, I'll consider that one. Another one I was looking at
was the red sound cycloops. It's pretty (extremely) basic,
but for DJ style 1 or 2 bar loops, it's ideal. V. small too.
The only reason I've not bought one already is that it
doesn't offer that much more than the 'toy' sampler built
into the KP.

Taxidermist, yes, it's the mpc1000 I've been looking at.
Can't see any second hand ones around yet and even then,
given akai's technics-like resale values, it'll still be
£400ish, which is a fair whack more than the ES1.

What's people's opinon on using an ES1 with an akai pad
style midi controller?

You should be able to find one for about £300. Either way,
I have been finding lately that its usually benefitial to
wait it out and spend the couple extra dollars instead of
buying the more affordable piece of gear. Although after the
microkorg incident, I kind of have a bias against the signal
generating capacities of korg gear.

Definatey, I have no problem postponing getting something
and saving for the better version if I'll use it regularly.
My decks took a year to save for and then the replacement
mixer I got was another 6 months. :)

are you looking for something just to layer small loops down
into a sequence?

I'm undecided. At the least, I'd like a single channel
looper, so I could effectively use 2 decks and the sampler
as 3 channels. Looking at more functionality, I'd like to be
able to use it as a sample based drum machines (part of the
reason why the ES1 looks good). I'm not really looking for
an "all in one" studio alternative that'll do everything.
More something that's just very good for sampling/recutting
beats. It'll probably be used 80% live and 20% studio. I
don't use hardware for the principle of it and I'm not
someone who automatically prefers hardware to software. It's
more for the visual/tactile aspect and reliability, making
it more suitable for live use.

Hmmm. Well, another alternative might be the roland sp404
that just came out. Its battery powered and has a built in
microphone is retailing for around $395us, which translates
to a couple hundred pounds, if I am not mistaken. It has
both 12 bit and 16 bit sampling, and can store up to 1 gig
worth of samples with the cf card.

drop the lime uses the KP-1 for all his live vocals - his is
ALL fucked up though...if you see him live try to check it
out its a mess

when he played twice here in philly and he was setting up i
kept laughing at how damaged it was...but hey, if it works,
fuck it right?

i want one of those KP-2's - they look flippin sweet

I had the KP2 but one some points I didnt like it.

I DO like the effects and the flexibility of the machine,
but a major drawback I stumbled across was that the effects
sounded too plastic after a while.

Before that I owned a KP-1 but that thing gave the effect
signal way louder than the dry signal... sucked, dumped it.

yeah I know what that's like in a way... the 76 key
workstation synth that I have (yamaha ex5) has some cool
tricks up its sleave, but for the most part the sounds
really seem too soft/have no bite. If I had the money I'd
sell it and upgrade to something better, but it'll do for
the time being.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-11-12 00:14 [#01776091]

Gotcha. The best part of the Microkorg was the modulation
routings. They were easy to do, and it was fun modulating
the ringmod ammount, and playing with the arpregiation
sequencer. But when I got the evolver, it sounded so much
better, and had 80 times the modulation possibilities, and I
had a keyboard that I could use as a controller that worked
better, so it ended up taking up space. Unfortunately, I
found out that none of the stores in vancouver carried them
anymore, and they were still in demand, and that I could
have asked for another $100 and still sold it easily. :(

damn, it always sucks when you find out you've undersold
something... to avoid that, I follow the ignorance is bliss
principle: once I've sold something, I never again check
it's market value so that I won't know if I got ripped off.
:D

Yeah me too ;). Its just I had someone call me about the
listing the day after I had sold it. They told me that you
couldn't find it anywhere in vancouver, and then when I was
trolling the classifieds for synthesizers a couple days
later, I noticed one more was listed for $450. |(

On a better note, I just ordered a yamaha TX81z off ebay
yesterday. They aren't the most spectacular synthesizers,
but I have been wanting a classic FM synthesizer for a
couple months now. I finally just broke down and ordered the
first reasonable looking one I could find for a decent
price. Happiness abounds :D

Hmmm. Probly not, but there is a comparable patch I am sure.
When they first came out, a lot of studios bought tx81z's
because of the low frequencies that they could milk out of
them. Thats why they are so cheap, because there are so many
of them. But this particular synth only has 4 operators as
opposed to the 6 that are available in the DX7.

Am I ever bad with money. I just bought ordered another
synth on ebay. Another yamaha. This one is the SY22. Its a
vector synthesizer similar to the vst plugs camelion and
terra, and allows you to record joystick motions to the
keyboard so every time you press a key, it replays that
joystick motion.
