"Copy Controlled" CDs

I hate "Copy Controlled" CDs, because I primarily listen to
music using my mp3 player. If I can't rip the CD, then I
don't want it.

Yesterday, I bought My Morning Jacket - Z without realizing
that it was copy controlled until after I opened it. This
upset me, but I guess it's my fault for forgetting to check
the packaging.

Just out of curiosity, I tried ripping it with Creative
Jukebox in Windows XP. It appeared to work, although slowly,
but when I listened to the MP3 it was all jumbled and
stuttery. (Sounded kind of neat, too.)

I then tried ripping it with iTunes on my Powerbook, and it
worked just fine! This made me happy and relieved.

Anyone know how Copy Controlled CDs (are supposed to) work,
and why iTunes on my Powerbook isn't foiled by it? (I'm not
sure if it's the software, or the CD drive that's
responsible.)

Which software did you use? Which CDs?

Sorry my post was so long, but I think you misunderstood
it.

iTunes DID rip the cd fine. :)

i only use cd's to burn them for my dipshit friends and
relatives

i use http://www.dbpoweramp.com/ ...its wicked

if you buy any cd's that are protected you should take them
back and tell the store or whoever that that is the gayest
invention of all time - if they refuse throw it at them and
tell them to fuck themselves, or the little hole in the cd

If CD's are copy protected I just record the audio, edit it
into tracks and convert to MP3 later.

Some Copy Controlled CDs work with iTunes some don't there
doesn't seem to be much logic to it.

havent tried this, but ive heard it works. you take a
Sharpie and make marks with it in the outer "protected" rim
of the cd. keeps the cd player from recognizing the
"protection" info. good luck.

i've read somewhere that copy controlled cds were actually
cds with voluntarily added errors, that are supposed to
disturb the cd reading on computers but not on regular cd
players.

anyway i don't know how you feel about them but i think it's
pretty much treating the customers like shit; selling
defective products because the customers might use
them in an illegal way. i boycott them, even if i can read
them with itunes. it's just plain wrong.

You should get something for the awesomeness of that post.

There are ways around anything. It all comes down to are you
patient and want to take the time?

All "Copy Controlled" CD´s I´ve tested has worked like a
ordinary CD on my PowerBook with iTunes. But most of the
labels I buy music from doesn't treat me as a criminal.

How Nieve are these record labels to think that having Copy
Control CDs will effect illigal downloading/sharing if
anything it wil encorage it. If I buy a CD and it doesn't
work, then and only then do I attempt to download it. I
encorage others to do the same!

As I mentioned in my initial post, I'm boycotting copy
controlled CDs.

Two specific CDs that I want to buy, but won't because
they're copy controlled, are Doves - Some Cities and Air -
Talkie Walkie. I'm tempted to just illegally download the
mp3s instead, but I haven't yet.

Don't you like just hold Shift when you stick in the CD to
stop the wanky CC software from running.

i reckon copy protcted cds are flawed product, if i ever
bought one by accidednt id take it back and go "oi this cd
is fucked, i cant put it on my computer", id want my money
back

anyway, what does it stop?? cos some one could always line
out it and upload somwehere + it would get everywhere like
that so it wouldnt stop piracy at all just makes it fucking
inconvenient
