Your custom 404 page doesn't show up in IE because the page file size is too small. I don't know if you know or not?

Well no because you have to make things work with the most popular browser whether you agree with their policies or not.

Nope. I don't think it will work for a lot of people because IE can be a complete pain when it comes to 404's. I think it is if the file is less than 512bytes in size it may not show.

Eff that -
If the website's pages are ok by the www consortium's guidelines, then it's ok. If IE decides to have a problem with it, then that's IE's problem.
They're my thoughts anyways. I'm fairly hot-headed on this issue, especially since my bank's internet banking doesn't work with firefox, and sometimes refuses to work with IE. If everyone just did as the www3 says, it'd be a much better internets :(

Not really...a lot of the progress of the internet and new features have only been developed due to microsoft and netscape putting custom features in...the W3 a lot of the time just seems to be watch how popular a feature is and then adopt it as a standard.

I'd like you to name more than one of these features.
The most used web technologies of the last few years are -
flash - developed by macromedia, html syntax invented by W3C
CSS - pretty much 100% W3C, since the guy who invented it (now heading up Opera) worked with W3C during its conception
XML - W3C all the way
the WWW consortium isn't dragging its heels, it's just being beaten over the head by microsoft who're using their market share.

I am talking about a lot of the things prior to flash and css. A lot of the formatting information incorporated within the tags and the general implementation of multimedia within browsers.
Besides XML is a subset of SGML which was developed by IBM. TBL also based HTML on SGML before the W3C was started.

Not sure. Just add some meta data or comments or something to the file to make it over 512bytes and I will test it for you. If it works then it should work for all IE's

redrum: I think you've got it a bit wrong. if you want to make pages that a large portion of the people online can't view, it's your problem, and not anyone elses. if you design web pages, maximum compatibility is not only wanted, but I'd say it's required (and also very possible while still staying within w3c standards).
