....to mix two full-length MP3s like Traktor?
If so, how? Does it work well?

Yes Ableton can be used.
If you have V5 then it can directly import MP3's, earlier versions require .Wav files.
After importing a track you need to setup warpmarkers. These tell ableton the timing of the track. If you place them on the first beat of every bar you will get very accurate timing, but every 4 bars is usually tight enough.
I have used ableton at gigs like this a few times but it can be very boring and a bit too easy. Lately i have been taking out tracks that are broken into smaller looped sections so you can remix tracks as you go along.
Aside from DJ'ing ableton is brilliant for tightening up shit musicians like myself who can't play acoustic instruments very well.

Is there some way to turn off the conversion of the mp3s? I tried v5 yesterday and found a folder with 2.2GB worth of aiffs that had been converted from the tracks i used in my mix.

I didn't know about the temp folder but it does make sense. With the way that mp3's are encoded it wouldn't be possible for Ableton to process editing etc efficiently. So I reckon it is a necessary evil.

Sounds good........ but how long does it take to set up warp markers on an average track?

It takes ages, especially for more abstract tracks. (House tracks are easy.)
Before my last gig I spent the best part of a week warpmarking about 50 records....it's painstaking work and I got completely sick of the tracks by the time i had finished.
Not recomended unless you have bags of time and want to really fuck around with the tracks as you play, otherwise stick to traktor or the technics.

Ah - maybe I won't bother then :)
You also need to set up the beatmarkers in Traktor for it to work properly, but it only takes 30 seconds a track once you've mastered it.

basicly you load an mp3 track into live 5 and turn the warp function on. once ableton finished scaning the track turn the warp function on and adjust the start position (at the first kick) then turn the metronome on and adjust the warp markers according to the metronome. that's it.

Agreed, it's much quicker easier in Traktor. As Kado says, I'd only use ableton to remix tracks on the fly or combine smallish loops of existing tracks with your own music.

I thought the whole point was that live 5 would do all the work for you. That's what the complex warp thing is about surely?

Complex Warp works damn well for me. My mix used only complex warp and I put a lot of trust in it because I did the mix on the fly.

So using Complex Warp there's no need to manually set up warp markers?

The answer is Yes and No.
I've found that more often than not that it's spot on. You may need to move the first marker but after that it's good. Sometimes though it's hopeless :)
