Has anyone bought on recently? I am thinking of getting a
new 7 megapixel compact soon.

Could you post which one you got and what it's like?

Nikon D70, and it's great.

Sweet, looks like an SLR.. I heard the lens is a bit better
than Sony, but I like the compactness of the snap and shoot
stuff. Like the Sony DSC W7 or DSC P200.. The Canon one's
are quite nice, but not sure about the outer casing on them.

i want a decent phone/pda combo with a cameraphone that
doesn't suck.

megapixels i care less about rather than picture quality,
especially in darker conditions (related to the small lens
on cameraphones i believe).

doesn't seem one exists, though :-(

Yes, indeed they do.

But it's true that SLRs are a bit cumbersome if you just
want to shoot random stuff while you're out and about.

7 megapixels is perfect. I have a camera with 5.1 magapixels
and it does always awesome photos. Really a great
quality...

A little sample, resized though...

i want to have one, maybe i'll have one for my birthday...
but i don't know which one to choose... so i'm checking
guides and stuff...

if you say Nikon is a good brand, this one looks
pretty cool... i don't know.

It "looks" good, but you have to take into account how easy
it is to hold. If it's too small and waif like it's harder
to keep steady, which would mean blurrier pictures. That's
why I think I'm going for the DSC-W7, which is still compact
but a bit more substantial to hold.

I also held a Sony DSC-T7, which is even more waif like ,
and sort of proves my point. I'm be worried about it
sliding out of my hand!

yes, you're right... i thought about that after i posted
it.

and i read a review saying it was very slow (big delay
between you pressing the button and the camera taking the
picture), which is annoying i guess. the other reviews were
good though.

i'll check some other models out...

i thought of the Canon Ixus 700 too. but i don't know. it's
more expensive as well (and that doesn't necessarily mean
better quality).

Also, these two are good in the 6/7 megapixel class of
compacts:

Fuji Finepix F10
Panasonic DMC-FX7

Nice.. an SLR. If I get more enthusiastic following my
experiments with the snap and shoot on Holiday next month,
I'll probably make the upgrade.

I've got an unused Canon 1D Mark II which I bought for £300
and my Nikon Digital SLR as part exchange. Nice deal I
thought. It's too big though and I haven't had the chance
to use it yet. Maybe next month when I go to Iceland.
Dunno about compact cameras. I've got a Canon A95 at the
moment which does everything I need it to.

say.

"But it's true that SLRs are a bit cumbersome if you just

Uh? People have been used Reflex bodies for almost a
century now. It's the most commonly widespread camera type
in the world. The vast majority of photos in the existance
of humanity have been done with that type of camera.

They aren't cumbersome at all, in fact I find that smaller
cameras are worse than any SLR will ever be for taking
pictures.

What I mean is, if I just walk to the shops, go clubbing or
something - I'm not so likely to take my SLR with me. I
might see something I want to shoot, but can't.
That said, I do take it with me quite a lot. You just have
to get into a habit of carrying it around. But I only take
it with me when I'm in the mood to take some pictures.
