i know very little, or close to nothing about it. i'd like
to check out some, preferably something really intense and
dark. something not too pop. thank you.

totally cover the shit out of this

I know an awful lot more about this than I should really as
I was totally into it for about 5 years and only recently
moved onto electronic music.

if you want dark then you'l be looking more at bands like
Cradle of Filth however I recommend In Flames as they ahve
the tunes and lyrics to boot. Very Scandinavian.

Iron, Steel, Aluminium or Bronze. Also Silver and Gold. And
Mercury, Copper and Tin too.

No.

Cradle of Filth isnt really as good as people make them out
to be. Then again thats just my opinion.
------------------

Eyehategod (pick all albums): Its dark and sounds
like the whole band is about to kill someone and then commit
suicide any moment. Jimmy Bower on Guitar!!!! Mike Williams
is completely awesome on vocals which brings him into my #1
vocalist of all time position.

Crowbar Kevin Bond baby! woot! I forgot who does
vocals in this band but they totally mesh so well together.
I get the feeling of extreme power while listening to it.
Kind of like i could beat the shit out of everyone in a
drunken rage or something.

The Melvins Because in this thread someone needs to
mention them and i am trying to be the first.

Sleep (dope smoker, holy mountain) Dope smoker
shouild win a fucking award. The song is like 65 minutes
long. :D!!!! This band is sorely underrated. I would love to
check them live!!

Super Joint Ritual You got Phil from pantera, Jimmy
bower from ehg and kevin bond from crowbar. Its like a dream
team! Phil sounds more on the hardcore side but they still
take it slow at times due to bower's new orleans style.

Down Another side project from Phil. #2 is my
personal favorite. I think you may like this. More later.

it's been years since I've listened to metal but these still
come to mind

Tool
Kyuss
a perfect circle
(early) Korn
deftones

you probably know all these I guess. and they aren't all
"real" metal. but lets face it. real metal sucks. :p

oh yeah I'll be the first to admit that everyone should stay
away from CoF however if he wants truly dark metal music
then I guess thats it. The song I'd suggest is Presents
from the poison-hearted
because its the only one I still
enjoy.

Down are really good too along with Soil.

Jungle Rot They are like a slow version of cannibal
corpse. The sound is similar but its never real fast. At
least not to my memory.

The Unseen Ok so its not metal and more half and half
punk and hardcore but i really like them so i am going to
break the norm here and mention them. :D

Stormtroopers of Death Continuing to break the norm
once more. If you havent heard them before then talk to me
because i have some really rare mp3's that are legal to
share because billy knows about it. The band comprised of
Billy Milano (MOD) Scott Ian (anthrax) Charlie B (anthrax?)
and Danny liliker.

Its a hardcore band thats far from serious. Just read some
of the lyrics or listen to the ballads. They always have fun
at shows. Its a real joy to listen to and are one of my
favorite bands of all time. Billy is still accessable these
days and returns emails and such! Bonus!

"metal" is a very broad genre once you develop an
understanding of it. it's just like anything else, really.
there are tons of different subgenres...

anyway, you already know the melvins and fantomas... bands
sort of on the fringe of metal.

i will recommend these albums:

Eyehategod - "Take As Needed For Pain"

Sleep - "Sleep's Holy Mountain" and "Dopesmoker"

Brutal Truth - "Need To Control" (very extreme music -
grindcore mixed with industrial/noise)

Hellchild - "Bareskin" (don't bother with the covers ep)

Neurosis - "A Sun That Never Sets"

Thats like the black metal band for 14 year old kids trying
to be different. They shop at hot topic and wear dog
collars. Black metal goes deeper. They are the tip of the
ice berg.

But i see what you are saying.

Either way all suggestions are good because maybe it will
open a new door to goran!

I think Goran should begin by listening to System of a
Down's self-titled debut album and if he likes that then he
can move on to the early Korn stuff and then bands like Down

I saw slayer live at Hammersmith Apollo last
October/November and never listened to metal much since. I

Yes, but he has a very valid point to not liking death-metal
style vocals.

I also think he has a very strong point with the fact that a
lot of metal lyrics, especially the really dark stuff, are
in fact insanely childish.

well they were amazing live, "blood" actually rained down
across the set as they played that song and of course
Mandatory Suicide was an absolute stomper of a track
when belted out live at full volume. I think they're a band
who exist to play live and thrive off the energy which the
crowd gives them. They've disappointed in the studio and i
don't think the albums reflect the true direction of the
band

I just immensely dislike moshing and ended up standing at
the back as far away from the put as possible because all I
wanted to do was watch the band and listen to the music.
Fuck all that lets see how many people I can beat up to
the sound of metal in the mosh pit
crap. I guess it was
that which put me off the genre eventually along with just
maturing.

it's fine to not like a style of singing and i agree that
most metal lyrics are childish. my problem is with the
statement, "I want some substance" coming from somebody who
listens to fucking korn. and also, you can't possibly say
that a certain technique or style of singing (whatever it
may be) has "less substance" or is inferior in some way to
any other style. that's an incredibly ignorant assumption
to make.

i may not like opera singing or rap, for instance, but does
that mean all rap singing is stupid? of course not. it's a
different style. in this world, there are other forms of
music than what you normally listen to! what a shock! that
doesn't mean it isn't as good as what your limited tastes
have experienced.

Lamb of God Every decade you get brand new metal. A
band the takes the genre into new heights. The 80's saw
slayer, the 90's saw pantera and this decade has lamb of
god. The Addler brothers kick maxium ass behind W. Randell
Bylthe on vocals. All i can say is "triples over doubles" a
drumming technique used by addler explained on the newest
DVD. GET IT JUST GET THE DVD SOMEHOW DO IT.

I think its called Killadelphia.

Perfect quality concerts, awesome extras and behind the
scenes which show the guys being hilarious and regular like
you and me. One of the best bands currently.

i also think that most metal is totally stupid. most of any
music is stupid. look at all the electronic music in the
world right now. what percentage of that is really
worthwhile? the aphex twins and the autechres of the world?
and how much is awful imitations? i'm sure you'll find
there is a much higher percentage of utter shit electronica

It is incredibly ignorant if it's an assumption. If it's a
measurement of the qualities of the technique or style, it's
not.

Metal singing (the stuff he was referring to) is generally
completely monotonous, consisting merely of long growls,
shouts and screams.

For me, that is absolute bullshit. It proves no talent on
the part of the "singer" -- that isn't singing -- and I find
it quite boring and off-putting. I could listen to death
metal were it not for the vocals.

And before you jump at me for saying "that isn't singing" --
it's not. Growls, shouts, screams aren't techniques of
singing. Just like talking isn't a technique of singing.
They're all vocal articulations. Singing is another,
completely seperate, type of vocal articulation.

There are plenty of bands in the punk rock, grunge and rock
genres whose singers combine singing and screaming,
shouting, and to a far lesser extent, a bit of growling.

Death metal, on the other hand, uses these sounds
exclusively.

No one is ever forced into a pit. At least here they arent.
Most hardcore kids have "pit ethics" and usually keep people
from hitting non pit people, help downed moshers and make
sure they are ok. Everytime i was floored by some big
monster some hardcore kid in a hatebreed wifebeater was
helping me up right away and asking me if i needed out.

Hardcore kids are the best people ever.

This one time at a metal show, during the pit some bigger
metal guy got pissed after catching a spinkick(?) and he
pulled a knife out. Then around 30 hardcore kids jumped his
ass and beat the piss out of him.

I think any "true" metal fan will admit that the first 2
korn albums are very good. ok sure it has lots of screaming
and cursing. but to me the anger felt/feels genuine. after
that they got fat and rich. and so did their music.

and DeleriousWeasel also gave an element in metal culture I
truly hate. Moshing. really, that's the most stupid thing I
must have seen and experienced. people just wanna hurt each
other. I have nothing against bumping into each other a bit.
but I've seen some stupid things on metal gigs. also, that
whole "look at me I'm so tough because I wear metal chains
all over my body" attitude is quite laughable.

you are wrong about that. it is singing. it requires a lot
of technique and skill and it is very challenging to do. it
requires a lot of physical effort to breathe properly, for

with any kind of sustain.

go look it up in the fuckin dictionary. it's singing.

and I know its really cringeworthy but when you're actually

really awesome and cools you down at the same time. a nice
novelty.

Virginpusher : I also saw hatebreed live when they were on
the Slipknot and Mastadon tour and really enjoyed them above
the other bands. Jasta has a charisma about him that won the
crowd over immediately even though none of us had paid to go
and see them in particular. Live for this is truly a

side? I'm pretty sure I read that in Metal Hammer a

out how fucking far removed some of the comments in this
