it is insane! mikael åkerfeldt of opeth has a nasty growl
and a really good "clean" voice as well.

totally agreed with you on the moshing and chains.

-add the unnecessary dirtiness of metal lovers to the list,
its terrible at a gig, feels like being stuck in a rush hour
tube train with people coming back caked in stinking mud
from Glastunbury -_-

when i went to iron maiden there was quite a few pit's and i
wanted to watch them play aswell i dident have to stay a
mile back from the stage i just made sure not to fall into a
pit, and never venture into pits with alot of people in em'
on your own because it's most likely there's a bunch of
mates wating for a stranger to jump in so they can knock you
about.

It may require practise to growl with sustenance, but so
what? That makes the person a good growler, not a good
singer. Singing not only involves melody, it is a completely
different type of vocal articulation.

I went and looked it up in the dictionary and i got:
"To emit a low guttural sound or utterance."

Singing on the other hand is "to utter a series of words or
sounds in musical tones... to make melodious sounds".

Don't even think of saying "that's just semantics". It's
not.

There is a clear and definite distinction between growling
(death metal "singing") and real singing, and no
interpretation of what music is can break this distinction
down. If you enjoy listening to it, that's great, but it's
still just growling and not singing.

the berzerker?
you mean the dude that playes guitar over 1 minute speedcore
tracks? and starts every song with a movie sample?
yes I've heard of him. :)

mmm I guess I was generalising on the basis of one gig,
however I'm sure maiden fans are much more toned down in
comparison to the fans of Hatebreed, Slipknot and Slayer all
in one small venue.

Not that i am aware of. Then again you never know. I almost
died during that show from exhaustion. It was great. I
experienced the biggest surge of energy that never stopped.
I must seee them again

Arf,

This thread will be a typical conversation between metal
fans. Arrogance, ignorence and stupid shit with a hint of
truth. This happens all over in real life with metal fans.
They are wildly opinionated. I love it!!!!

ah yes they're sort of a very fast metal band and look like
slipknot and have the cliche of stating that no one will
ever know their true identity.

'The Drummer' is rated as the second best drummer in the
world behind Joey Jordison (of Murderdolls) so I'll give
them credit for that, oh and their movie samples are ace.

nice work selecting the definition that would fit your
argument. now i've looked it up and it says:

# Music.

1. To utter a series of words or sounds in musical
tones.
2. To vocalize songs or selections.

3. To perform songs or selections as a trained or
professional singer.
4. To produce sounds when played: made the violin sing.

where is the part that says, "Only the beautiful sounds of a
young lady singing a certain melody by a classical composer
is True Singing and everything else is garbage and not
music!"

no, it's vocalising. it is a style of singing.

buy an album because the bassist of an unknown band might be

I'm not arguing whether it's musical or not. The argument of
"What is music" is as old as that regarding what art is.

My point was that growling, screaming, etc isn't singing. If
you consider it music, and enjoy listening to it that's just
fine and dandy. But it's not fucking singing, and I think
the distinction needs to be observed.

Yeah, who gives a shit -- well I do. As someone who holds
real fucking singers as opposed to people who can roar for
seconds on end in far higher esteem, i fucking give a shit.

silly aengus this debate can never be won.

singing is loosely used to coin those that use vocals in a
band or any musical setting.

you are thinking of the older aspect when singing required
training and sounded more like vocal ellogence. Sinatra and
shit.

Either way there is still vocal training and talent that
goes into it. I already see you itching at the point that i
said "talent" but not everyone can do it.

Just like there are many sub categories of music there are
multiple ways to sing and play an instrument. One way isnt
superior to the other, its all a matter of opinion.

ah well! Fuck it!

yes, exactly. one style is not better than any other. it
has no bearing on taste - it's just a matter of fact. there
are different ways of singing in the world.

redrum, this debate has nothing to do with talent - you are
the one who brought that into play. you are trying to
define something extremely broad and varied in terms of
aesthetics. you didn't know what singing was and now you
do. just get over it.

It just pisses me off that death metal uses growling and
screaming exclusively, with no real, melodic singing.
These vocals can add a huge amount of power to a song in
moderation, but I hold firm that their use all the way
through a song (let along a whole fucking album) is
mindless.

It also says a lot about the mental state of the people
performing death metal.

That's it. I'm out.
