Yeah I never got why they used them. I assumed it was show
too.

they keep the orchestra in synch and kind of adjust the
"levels" of each part.. they also tell the players when to
play piano, forte, adante and whatnot. the conductor is the
guy holding the orchestra together.

Why? I assume the musicians know the music so well they
probably don't even look at him.

I could ask the same question about your presence on this
earth.

the conductor may also arrange the music, e.g. cut bits out,
change the order, re-orchestrate it, etc.

they're good for telling you when to come in as well, like
when you've had 100bars rest and got bored counting the
fuckers.

They do - but the conductor conducts the performance, the
feeling...

they only became necessary with Romantic music, when the
orchestra became much larger and there needed to be a
cohesive element tieing the groups of instruments together.
before that the lead violinist would "conduct"...

about not looking at him, that is.

Are his "moves" improvised or do they follow a strict code?

they follow a code. a certain gesture means "play faster"
and so-on. of course he can improvise, but he'll still be
using appropriate gestures.

His moves in keeping the beat are set. Moves regarding tempo
and dynamics aren't, I believe, drunken mastah.... I think
they're seen in the conductor's general movement and facial
expression... like you'd have to be autistic to not
understand when he wants you to play faster or louder..

as an aside, I always find frank zappa quite funny-lookin
when he conducts with a guitar slung around his shoulder :)

what a guy

yes, tempo and dynamics have special gestures.. how would
you mimic the difference between piano and piano pianissimo?

they don't really gesture for individual dynamic markings,
just 'quieter' or 'louder'. your music will tell you at
which dynamic to play.

I've been around people who play in orchestras my whole life
and asked them once what the conductor does.. they told me
and I did some research, and suddenly going to the concerts,
the conductor made more sense. there are special moves.

well, of all my years of playing in orchestras i never
identified special 'moves' for different dynamics. other
than things such as sforzando.

maybe it's just this orchestra then. I've seen them with
three different conductors who all did the same.

this sums up their gestures quite well:

# Tempo. Through the speed of the gesture.
# Volume. Through the size of the gesture.
# Articulation. Through the angle and "weight" of the
gesture.
# Starting Moment. Through a breath and the predictable
speed of the gesture.

they serve to flap around at the front and keep the chello
players who aren't doing much at the back awake.

ahh. so you're a true low-frequency addict then huh

they're unwieldy bastards. i wish i'd taken up piano to be
honest, or at least kept it up, it's like <3. do you miss
playing the dbl bass?

only a bit, because bass guitar gradually took over and i
still play that in a few different bands.

it's also usually a position of respect given to older,
skilled musicians/composers.

kind of like they hit the top of the ladder.
