'hot rats' is probably one of his most famous, i'd recommend it. it's got captain beefheart singing 'willie the pimp' on it, followed by an 8minute zappa solo. Great song!

Songs that you must hear are as follows:
"montana" and or the version on that CD i recommended "montana (whipping post)"
arrrgh.... i just sat here for a while drawing absolute blanks. Just like when you go to browse CD's at a record store but you cant remember what you want to look for.

WHIPPING POST! i'm afraid we don't know that one could you hum us a few bars?
great thanks..
emmm yes it depends what you want to listen to - he made all sorts of music. my favourite stuff is his jazz/rock instrumental stuff, i think anyone with a keen taste in music would appreciate its beauty:
hot rats the grand wazoo waka/jawaka zoot allures over-nite sensation one size fits all roxy & elsewhere live @ the filmore 1971
they're all albums i could never live without. you might want to check out "jazz from hell", it's his synclavier stuff (programmed computer), although i only ever really listen to 2 tracks from it, not very keen on it.. (those two tracks are 'night school' and 'g-spot tornado' for those who are interested).
i really wish he was alive today. i'm so certain he'd dig aphex and squarepusher and would be making his own idm sorta stuff, but very melodic in a be-bop way. he described his own music, especially his live soloing, as creating live "air sculptures".. which is essentially what idm artists nowadays are doing (especially autechre) - crafting sound very intricately.
also, i have to second virginpusher's reccomendation of YCDTOSA #2, there's an AMAZING version of inca roads on it. there's also an amazing version of big swifty on YCDTOSA #1..
*double click* oh yes it's pure bliss... that keyboard solo..

OMG!!! INCA ROADS!!!! Thats exactly the song i was trying to think of! Phew!!!!! I feel so much better now. That was killing me.
"it must be a john cage compisition!"
and also that song where they do the music first and then the vocals completely seperate.

which one's that? to be honest i kinda stick to those songs from YCDTOSA.. which is bad.. but yeah.
i'm not smoking hash anymore and that's kinda contributed to my neglecting my complete fz collection.
your description of that song reminds me of the version of inca roads on "the best band you never heard in your life", where they don't do the really fast verse at the end (didavehiclecomefrom...) and just put in bits ("her fiire".. or whatever it is).
and they do a funny "sample" of stayin' alive too :D

Its on YCDTOSA. where they do the music and they say "and now for the vocals without the music" or something. I think someone does brief tap dancing aswell

i phrases that first bit badly. i meant "i kinda stick to those songs i listed from YCDTOSA"..
i'll give #2 a full run through sometime soon (perhaps tomorrow in work) and see what you're talkin about :)

Most excellent. Some songs on there are not as good as some others but when you are on a road trip it totally works quite well~!

I would start with Freak Out!, Absolutely Free and We're Only in it for the Money. In fact, that's what I did, long ago. They're all full pop song structures but still totally fucked up. Then I'd move on to Hot Rats and Uncle Meat. In fact, that's what I did, long ago.

good stuff :D
there's a 9.3GB zappa torrent on torrentspy, i got my friend to download that for me a while ago, and went to his house and copied it onto the laptop.
All his albums (72) and about 20 or so bootlegs/rarities

however...... if you're just starting to listen to zappa, you don't want to download 9gb of his stuff, especially when I, a die-hard fan, don't listen to about.. 35 of the albums, AT ALL.
some of his stuff is just dreadful :/

There are two good cds to get if you want to get a broad slab of zappa. The first is called 'cheap thrills', and is quite cheap for a CD. you can get it in HMV or something. The second is 'son of cheap thrills', again HMV.
Both have a good broad selection of his stuff IMHO.

yeah I have actually, a strange girl I know lent me one of the albums and I gave it a listen but really wasn't impressed with his style....not particularly good vocals, tunes or lyrics. It was a pink disc, no idea what the album was though.

wow thanks for the response. i've actually got a copy of apostrophe & sheik yerbouti. and i've spent so much time just breaking down these albums...the complexity of the tracks and everything is just so great. i've found a ton of interviews he did on youtube...and now i'm more interested in seeing some of his video/film projects. what a cool cool dude.
