The funeral would be a disaster. You'd have Esther Rantzen
and Keith Barron constantly getting in the way telling
terrible stories.

Anyone think its a bit of a coincidence that Dog Belch
leaves the same day Whiteley dies...?

Whiteley's humour was mainly really lame puns and he was
always smiling whereas Dog_belch prefers biting comments and
attacking people with his pessimistic look on life. I
conclude that perhaps Belch/Whiteley just smiled on TV and
acted all nice as a facade so no one would guess!

sad to hear though, will they continue the series?

Mmmmm, lame puns. What really annoys me is how the countdown
timer only goes half way round. It's infuriating!

Anyway, how did he die? I heard he had a problem with his
vowels which made him inconsonant for some time.

Countdown's iconic presenter Richard Whiteley has died just
days after undergoing heart surgery.

The 61-year-old, from Ilkley, West Yorkshire, was taken ill
last month with pneumonia, and had undergone a heart
operation two days ago at Leeds General Infirmary and was
said to be doing well.

Whiteley had presented Countdown since the quiz was the
first aired on Channel 4 when the station was launched in
1982, and never missed an episode until he became ill last
month.

His Channel 4 Countdown co-presenter Carol Vorderman, who
presented the hit quiz with him for 23 years, was
"absolutely devastated" by his death.

Her agent, John Miles, added: "He was such a good friend
whom she loved dearly - they had 23 years of making
programmes together, that's about 4,000 programmes. He was
very special to Carol."

Whiteley, known for his loud ties and stripy jackets, became
an afternoon television icon, while maths boffin Vorderman
groaned on cue to his dreadful jokes.

The Queen was said to be a fan of the show, as was the late
Queen Mother.

The show was originally supposed to run for five weeks but
now has regular viewing figures of four million and enjoys
cult status.

Whiteley leaves behind his partner of 11 years, Kathryn
Apanowicz, who shot to fame on EastEnders in the 1980s.

His bosses at Channel 4 immediately expressed their
sympathy: "We are shocked and stunned to hear of Richard's
death. Our thoughts are with Kathryn and Richard's family
and friends."

saw my earlier post in this thread, that line from the movie

I was absolutely gutted to read the news this morning. The
world is truly worse off without him.

It actually feels like losing an old, dear friend - and I
didn't watch Countdown all that often. I can't imagine how
it must feel for his legions of fans.

Normally I couldn't care less what happens to "celebrities",
but Richard seemed about as far-removed from all that as can
be. He made a career out of being nice, polite, kind and
friendly - they were his only "gimmicks".

Respect to him and RIP.

I remember when Channel 4 was launched and Countdown was the
first show, I was hooked from that moment on. I used to
watch it with my Grandma, who was really good and should
have been a contestant. Hopefully she is up there with
Richard now asking him for vowels...

The test is do you remember watching Blockbusters when the
contestants looked really old!
