Put it into terms I can understand please.

a trillion floating point operations a second.

10 to the 12th power floating point operations per second
(trillions).

Floating point operations are what the big boys use to guage
processor speed - none of this MHz/GHz business! ;-)

The fastest computer in the world has a speed of over
36TFlops (don't quote me on that).

The number of Flops is determined through the LINPAK test,
quite cleverly devised by some mad computer scientist and
you can find an online, Java based version of the test to
benchmark your PC's speed.

Is a floating point a 3d vector point, in that a cube would
have 8?

Linpack - is the correct spelling.

Read more about it all here: http://www.top500.org

A type of literal value that represents a number including a
fractional portion (that is, the portion after a decimal
place).

A floating point operation is essentially just a simple
calculation. it could be addition subtraction etc. the
floating point refers to the decimal point which shifts
depending on requirement and limitations.

Blue Gene which is planned to have a 360Tflops peak
performance with the possibility of expansion to a petaflop
which would be unbeleivable.

oh and linpak is rubbish. its as much use as using the clock
speed of a processor as the measure of performance.
