so, my roomates and I had been going about what we thought was standard procedure for potty training dogs, which was rub their noses in the pee/poop, saying bad, and then taking them outside and saying Good and what not, and also reinforcing them with treats when they do manage to go outside... well we have been trying this for 2 weeks straight now and every day the dog shits or pisses in the house. Then today I come home to find that the dog has ripped up some pics (in frames no less) that were taken in thailand, even though she has chew toys, shat on the Xbox, and pissed on my bed. Needless to say I was forced to beat a bitch, but I really don't like hitting animals... No matter how much shouting, beating, and treat giving takes place, she does not seem to learn. There has got to be a better way for her to figure this shit out, because my patience is wearing very thin.

beating the dog is way uncool, and a waste of time :(

i dont actually beat her per say, so much as give her light slaps to indicate what is wrong.. I have never hit her hard.
we do not know how old she is or exactly what type of dog she is because she was a stray, but she seems to not be fully grown yet. She is generally a very obedient, playful, and loving dog, but she has yet to grasp the concept of not crapping on my stuff.

if she's crapping on everything when you're out, she might just be lonely and bored.... the ripping up of stuff and pissing on your bed seems to indicate this ... also taking her to dog obedience school would be a good move, just as a general point, along with regular execise etc etc......
as for toilet training, can you leave her outside all day? let her get used to shitting outside, picking her own spot etc. Then after a couple of weeks, let her in during the day and see what happens.......

but theres nothing I can do about it if shes lonely and bored... I'm here as often as I can be, but I work a lot as do both my roomates. I mean, being alone in my house has GOT to be a fuckload better than eating out of the garbage and being alone in the realworld, where she used to be. I don't see how its so hard not to ruin my shit while I'm away.

a person would think this, since a person can watch tv / use a computer / make itself its own food / generally amuse itself AND GO TO THE TOILET WITHOUT GETTING A BEATING AT THE END OF THE DAY FOR NO APPARENT REASON.
i don't care how lightly you say you hit it, you still at first described it as 'beating' which is an indication of the severity of what happened.
when i first clicked this thread before having read it i just thought "patience". that's all you need. but obviously you need a change of mentality - you can't keep any animal locked up in a house all day and not expect to come home to shit like that.

you seem to have miscontrued the situation based on a particular choice of words I made the apparent mistake of using.
Firstly "beat a bitch" is something I hear many 'thug' kids around here saying, and being a female dog (hence bitch), I thought I'd just say it but I guess the joke is lost on people outside the US... like I said I never hit her hard.
Secondly, I have never once hit her randomly at the end of the day or whatever. I always have done it right after she pissed/shat. Today was the first day I did not catch her in the act, but I'm pretty sure when I rubbed her nose in the poop she had a pretty goddamn solid idea of what she did wrong, so give me a little credit please. Also, my roomate was here when she did it, so if she had made any indication at all that she needed to go (and trust me, she doesnt wait by the door or anything, she just pics a random spot on the floor and goes), he would have taken her out and this whole fiasco would have been avoided.
thirdly, if you honestly think she would have a better life out on the streets not being couped up all day, you should have seen the shape she was in when we rescued her (shes still recovering from severe malnutrition), not to mention the fact that she was about to mauled by a much larger, and very strong pitbull that one of my friends neighbors owns. As far as I'm concerned, she would be dead without us and every day that she goes on living in my air conditioned (its 95 degrees farenheit outside), comfy, free-food apatment is a goddamned gift to her.

She's a dog, dude. When she was "on the street" she had other dogs around, other thing to do, freedom to run about...... being in-side is boring for her (and she never could get her head around airconditoning)........ patience is what you need, or a big back-yard......... other than that, you shouldn't underestimate the commitment that is required with a dog... i know you're trying to help and do good, but maybe you've taken something on that you just don't have the resources to do properly.

well, it was my roomate's idea to take the dog in, and it was at first supposed to be for only a couple of weeks till we could find her another home, but we've grown attached to her, and wonder what would become of her if we gave her to a humane society (most likely be put to sleep) so I dont know what to do.. honestly I wish I could just put her back on the streets and feel okay about it, but I cant.

dont beat ur dog! dont even slap it. Honestly, if u never slap a dog in the first place, but use the word no followed by a lack of eye contact, given time this punishment becomes equally as unenjoyable for the dog as a slap. best method is rewarding good behaviour.
And if your leaving a puppy alone all day u must surely expect it to shit and piss all over ur house and chew stuff. thats what they do. if it was a stray with no prior house trainign then u must take plenty of time to retrain it (retraining is harder than training but still possible).
Look for the tell tale signs of when its about to crap (sniffing the ground, circling around a spot etc). when u notice them take it outside, and when it performs reward and praise it. U could also try teaching it to crap on newspaper while ur out altho by the sounds of the age of the dog it should be way past that stage by now.
The chewing could either be a normal behaviour for an adolescent dog to strengthen its growing teeth, or more likely its boredom. I understand u cant be with it all the time, so the best thing to do is make ur house as 'dog proof' as possible before you go out. eventually it will grow out of this habit once it realises u will always come back for it.
For punishment, if shouting "NO!" isnt effective, try getting a water pistol... when it does something wrong say firmly, "no" and squirt it.
Another trick for stopping it chewing when your out, is to go thru the normal procedure u do when u go out, but wait outside the house. When it starts to misbehave make a loud noise to scare it (perhaps drop a tray of cutlry on the floor.) rinse and repeat untill it associates the scary noise with chewing your furninture.
In all honesty, such a young dog shouldnt be being left alone AT ALL, since when u go out, all the training is undone, noone is there to reprimand it when it does something bad, or reward it for behaving.
For other stuff (sit, lie down, stay etc), just do a couple of 15 minute sessions with the dog a day. only ca

thanks for the advice, I'm going to show this too my roomate when he gets back from costa rica and then we can figure out the best action to take, because honestly I hate hitting her just as much as I hate cleaning up shit from the carpet. :( I don't like being violent, especially to cuddly animals. My other roomate and I have decided that if we are going to let adam (the roomate in costa rica) keep the dog, then he's going to have to get it trained professionally so that we can all (including Cambria, the dog) be better off.

Get a cage- your dog obviously cannot be left unattended. The cage should be just big enough for the dog to turn around in, no larger. The dog goes in the cage at night and during the day when you are not home. When you let the dog out of the cage take him immediatley outside and if he does his business, go crazy with praise. Feed him at specific times and in specific amounts- dogs typically poo 20-40 minutes after feeding.
BTW- if he poops in his cage, your chances of house training him are near 0 percent.
And for all you bleeding hearts- If my dog shit on my xbox, I would most certainly smack its ass!

Redrum you've obviously never owned a dog. Until it is properly trained a cage is an indespensible tool. My youngest dog LOVES his cage and happily goes into it every morning before I go to work. It keeps him out of trouble and teaches him to control his bodily functions and avoids any scolding and conflicts that might arise from them wandering around the house.
My dogs are in perfect health and are exercised daily. The use of a cage in training is WIDELY known to be the most effective teaching method.
In fact I think a cage might do you some good.

I'm sure your mumsy did a fine job training him (a better job than she did training you obviously), but here in the real world, people have jobs and societal obligations to attend to. I have 2 dogs, both adopted from rescues. 1 is less than 2 years old and goes in the cage because he has yet to learn exactly what he can and cant chew on, the other spent her first 2 years learning by the cage method and now sleeps in her bed all day and is an absolute model citiczen.
I admire your outrage at a percieved mistreatment, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

I do know what I'm talking about. It's wrong to treat an animal in such a way. If you can't look after it, then don't get the fucking thing in the first place.
How is keeping an animal in a cage going to teach it not to chew on things that are outside of the cage? It makes more sense to leave it be and just tell it off sternly when it does wrong.
If you send it to the cage every time it chews on something that won't necessarily teach it anything - since it spends the whole day there already. Unless you're willing to admit that it can't in any event enjoy being in the cage, in which case you're admitting that you're subjecting it to prolonged daily mistreatment.

"It makes more sense to leave it be and just tell it off sternly when it does wrong."
You cannot teach a dog anything after the fact. The only way you should EVER discipline a dog is if you catch it 'in the act'. The cage is useful for this as well-
(as discipline). If you catch your dog doing something bad, you do not hit it- grab it's snout, push it towards the ground and say "NO" and "BAD" in a deep menacing tone of voice. Then say "Get in your cage" in an equally menacing tone of voice and make sure the animal goes into the cage, but never more than a few minutes. Dogs have a very short attention span and quickly forget that they are being punished. Consistency is the key and you must do this every time the dog fucks up.
To avoid confusion for when you just want the dog to go in the cage because you are leaving- pitch your voice high and say in an excited tone "time to get in your cage" you can give a treat as well, but tone of voice is the key and the treat will not be needed for long- again, consistensy is the key.
This is how you train a dog to be confident and smart. Your method of scolding a dog after the fact is ineffective and more importantly inhumane.

"Your method of scolding a dog after the fact is ineffective and more importantly inhumane."
Everytime except the one detailed at the start of this thread, I scolded her RIGHT after it happened or while its happening. Honestly, I can either keep doing it the way I am now, or just not do anything about it at all, and that certainly won't produce results.
Can I just say, for the record, that the dog got loose one day while we were gone, and when we came back it was waiting patiently for us by the door. It could have run away and resumed its life sleeping on the hard ground and eating trash, but it chose to come back and wait for us. This is because IT CLEARLY KNOWS THAT IT'S QUALITY OF LIVING HAS IMPROVED SINCE WE TOOK IT IN.

You cannot teach a dog anything after the fact.
Re-read what I wrote. Then pick up an Oxford dictionary and look up 'when'. Websters doesn't count, god knows what bullshit is in there.
I meant what I wrote. I do however agree with your ideas on intonation in voice, making your voice dramatically different when giving out to a dog as to when you're talking to it normally.
I still have a very fucking big problem with "The cage should be just big enough for the dog to turn
around in, no larger."
You'd be locked up over here for keeping a dog in that sort of cage during your working hours. I can't see why you have a problem comprehending its inhumanity.

Dogs are den dwellers, sleep most of the day when fed and find comfort in having their own cage. I find your outrage humorous as I' m sure your dogs do not recieve the excercise, love and affection not to mention vet attention mine do. Do a little research on the subject before your next foray to liberate the mink-farm.

lol gadaltoss (or whatever the fuck ur name is), how did u manage to come to the conclusion that we dont look after our animals simply because we dont cage them? thats a pretty big jump.
Dogs like to have a space of their own, thats for sure, but to say they like to have a cage of their own is wrong. Do you think dogs who have thier own basket pine for a cage to be locked in for hours on end? of course they dont. Dogs dont like being caged, untill you TRAIN them to like it. You admitted as much yourself when you described the method for getting your dog used to being in a cage. If they truely liked it as you say, then they wouldnt need that training. You really should think before you type, that way you can avoid contradicting yourself. Having said all this, with the proper training (as it seems your dog has had) it will enjoy its cage as much as my dog enjoys its basket.
The fact of the matter is, a puppy or young dog, should not be left alone throughout the day, especially if you wish to train its bad habits away.
you say we know nothing. zero. Do you think the same of, for instance, battersea dogs home, manchester dogs home, or pretty much any rescue centre (here in the uk anyway).
They vet potential owners who are wanting to rehome the dogs. If they see that the dog will be left alone all day while the potential owner goes to work, that person will not be allowed to rehome the dog. I guess they only do this because they know nothing about dogs?
Since you say that you have 2 rescue dogs, i guess animal care is different in the states, perhaps you've managed to twist the english language so much that care and neglect now mean the same thing to americans

By 16 weeks a puppy is capable of holding its bladder for 8 hours and that is the earliest any dog should be taken from its mother because it takes that long for the mother to teach them the dominance/submission behaviour.
I quite frankly do not believe you that they do not adopt to people that have jobs and if that were the case you would be destroying a ton of animals or keeping them in a kennel environment that will quickly(sometimes within days) drive them insane by hyperstimulation- a situation you must be familiar with as you claim to be so well versed.
So far you've shown no knowledge of animal behaviour- just what you consider proper human behaviour towards animals. And while it is entertaining for me to see you anthropomorphise dog's behaviour, it's becoming tedious for me to defend what is considered common best practice. Would I like to spend all day with my dogs? Certainly. Would it of been better for my dogs to of contracted dementia pacing circles in a kennel waiting to be adopted? I think not.
