Oh yeah, you said you didn't want manga, but the GUNNM
series is really great. Story is good, and the art is
beautifull.

I couldn't answer this before because of obvious
ban-reasons..

get anything written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Dave McKean
- "mr. punch", "violent cases" but especially "signal to
noise
". if you read any graphic novel, let it be that
one. (they also made "black orchid" together, which is okay,
but not as good as the above)

speaking of Neil Gaiman, people will now start talking about
the "sandman" series which he also wrote. I haven't read any
of them, so I can't say anything about that aspect, but I
think most of the art I have seen is piss-poor.

also speaking of Dave McKean - he has published two large
books which he wrote and drew himself. the first,
"Cages", is absolutely brilliant. quite expensive,
but certainly worth the money.
his second is a collection of shorter stories, called
"Pictures that tick" - very nice if you like McKean's art.

I would also recommend the work of Dave Cooper. very
weird and very good. great, great drawings. (he did a lot of
background work on Futurama - in fact, the 'HQ', the room
with the table they always sat around to discuss a new
mission was designed by him)

heres an example of some of McKean's artwork in "Cages"
(just one of the many styles he uses to tell his story):

I'd recommend From Hell by Alan Moore. It's by far
the most effective use of the medium I've seen.

Also, speaking of Dave McKean, I'd recommend Arkham
Asylum
, but only for the art. I didn't care much for
the story at all.

As for comics available on the web, check out
http://www.e-merl.com. It's pretty neat.

yes, "from hell" is also very good. (and puts the
graphic back into graphic novel)

"arkham asylum" is nice, but McKeans style at that moment
wasn't nearly as interesting as it gets later on - it's more
or less the same style he used in "black orchid". besides
that, like you say, the story isn't very good.
