My Polaroids

The polaroids I have posted so far on my
photoblog. These are taken with my two Polaroid SX-70
Alpha 1 Land cameras.

i was really skeptical reading the title. i only associate
polaroid with bright, red-eyed, expensive photos of xmas
parties. but i stand corrected now...

your flower photos are really stunning. and the park and
the train -- damn, these are good. the portraits at the
bottom are cool too.

well, i'm impressed. i guess you have an expensive polaroid
camera? or quality film? because these look nothing like
the sort of off-center, cheap photos i'm familiar with.

Ah, they are 70's polaride cameras? So, You aren't doing
anything special but using these oldies? Is the Polaroid
SX-70 or the Alpha better for that warm washed out look?

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2005-05-28 15:52 [#01615063]
Points: 2659 Status: Lurker

Yes, I'm using an old SX-70 Alpha 1 (same thing, bogala).
The proper film for the SX-70 is time-zero film. Some of
those shots, the earlier at the bottom, are taken with
faster 600-film. Not really made for the SX-70, you have to
compensate exposure or they will be all blown out. The
'Instant transportation' shots for example are taken with
600-film, as is that portrait above. For night time, tripod
photography, 600-film works fine.

What's special about the SX-70 (and the newer SLR680) is
that they're SLR-type cameras, ie you look and focus through
the lens. Not guessing focus and composing with a separate
viewfinder, like on all other Polaroids.

These cameras are easy to find on Ebay. I'm on my second
SX-70 now, after the first one died mysteriously. The newer
SLR680 has a flash and uses the more readily available
600-film.

Is it me?? Or do the TZ film photos look better? I like the
orange washed out look. Oh, you have an Sh-5? You like it?

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2005-05-29 03:55 [#01615384]

Yeah the SX-70 is supposed to use the time-zero film. It's
150ASA vs 600ASA of the 600-film. I've had to compensate
with a polarizer infront of the lens with the faster film,
but still the colors suffer. There is no way to change
ISO/ASA settings on the camera.

Yes, I like my SH-5. I haven't made any music in ages, but I
did play with the SH-5 a few days ago. I like to set the
LFOs to trigger the oscillators and then play with the
filters and modulations on top of that. Slow LFO-speeds and
you get nice ambiences, faster speeds and it's Kraftwerk's
Trance Europe Express straight out of the synth.

Thanks, zero-cool.

Very nice Holgas, Mattia. These two work very nicely
together. I love the weird compressed perspective.

I want one of the new Holgas with bulb-mode for long
exposures on a tripod.

Paco those photos are awesome man, I really want a polaroid
now... How much would it cost for one that can take nice
quality pics like you have?

offline Paco from Gothenburg (Sweden) on 2005-05-29 09:50 [#01615625]

My first SX-70 cost 90USD on ebay, second was 49USD. Both
were in great condition cosmetically. The nicer one died on
me recently.

I buy Time-Zero film in 100-packs, on ebay as well. Hunt's
photo sells those for ~100USD. Not cheap per photo, but here
in Sweden the film costs twice as much.

Don't forget the SLR680. It takes just as nice pictures and
the 600-film is easier to find in shops. There were a number
of various models of the SX-70 manufactured. They all look a
little different. Some of them have sonar autofocus. My
model is the Alpha 1 with manual focus wheel.

That's ok, obara, but you missed the essential ingredient of
the polaroid frames :) I also like to post them two at a
time, side by side. There was one exception, the self
portrait, which just looks strange alone.

Zephyr, I have no idea. I'm not even sure when production
started, but they are gorgeous cameras with the brown
leather and silver finish (it's not metal even if it feels
like it).

chaosmachine, many of those are bargain film cameras.
Exceptions being the EOS 300D (and the lenses), the
Hasselblad and the Voigtländer 12mm ultra-wide heliar
lens.

Thanks, aron.

Another great thing with the SX-70 is that it has variable
shutter speed. Most basic Polaroids have one set speed. You
don't know what it's going to be, but if you need long
exposures, just cover the meter window with your finger. Max
time is about 30s. I've heard about a trick to get even
longer times, if you open the film loading hatch during
exposure. I have to try that sometime when there's only 1
photo left :)

errr, what?

Enlarger lens, rubber bellows and the camera cap as a lens
mount. It's like a homemade lensbaby, except that it can
take sharp photos if you want to. You focus and tilt the
focal plane by moving and twisting the lens (it's on a
rubber bellows).

Normally the focus of a picture is in parallell plane with
the film. Things that are at equal distance are equally
sharp, the eyes in a straight on face shot for example. A
typical portrait taken with a large format view camera can
put the focus on the eyes and have the rest of the face
soften with tilting.

Example

The homemade lens is almost like that, except I have to hold
the lens while taking the shot.

Paco i see on your site that you have a hasselblad.

i'm wondering if it is medium format or large(65mm fil
etc...), which is it?

and how much did it cost you?, and also where did you get
it?

by the way, nice work on having a hasselblad, i'm looking
for one myself but they all seem to be above the price range
of $400, and i don't really wont to pay more than $200
australian

It's medium format. I've never heard of a large format
Hasselblad. They only other format from them, that I've
heard of, are the two 35mm panoramic X-Pan cameras. They're
really made by Fuji, with super sharp Fuji lenses. I think
Fuji makes the lenses for their new'ish H-system also.

I paid 8000SEK (Swedish krona) for mine, incl 1 A12mag and
one 80mm lens. The camera is from 1971 and the lens from
1989.
