once upon a time, he was despised by many. if you stick
around xltronic long enough, everything about you that
irritates people will seem endearing and familiar. for
example, people used to think anus_presley was a pretentious
twat for his "rr" quirk. now, he is univerally loved.
other people teased roygbivcore relentlessly about his
bizarre bacon phobia. now he too is universally loved. so
just sit back and wait...the love will come...

how is the "rr" quirk pretentious?

Pretentious \Pre*ten"tious\, a. [Cf. F. pr['e]tentieux.
See
Pretend.]
Full of pretension; disposed to lay claim to more than
is
one's; presuming; assuming.

Pretension \Pre*ten"sion\, n. [Cf. F. pr['e]tention. See
Pretend, Tension.]
1. The act of pretending, or laying claim; the act of
asserting right or title.
[1913 Webster]

The arrogant pretensions of Glengarry
contributed to
protract the discussion.
--Macaulay.
[1913 Webster]

2. A claim made, whether true or false; a right alleged
or
assumed; a holding out the appearance of possessing
a
certain character; as, pretensions to scholarship.
[1913 Webster]

This was but an invention and pretension given
out
by the Spaniards.
--Bacon.
[1913 Webster]

Men indulge those opinions and practices that
favor
their pretensions.
--L'Estrange.
[1913 Webster]

HOW could anyone consider it pretentious?

pretention doesn't have anything to do with it. did you mean
"ANNOYING" and were just trying to sound high-and-mighty?

Definitions of pretentious on the Web:

* ostentatious: intended to attract notice and impress
others

as in, "check it out, i'm quirky and unique and cool, i've
got this double rr thing going on."

note again, for god's sake note again, i did not generate
this opinion, i only observed it.

note also that my post is humorous; there is no guarantee
of love for anyone no matter how long they stick around
here....

has nothing to do with my questioning your use of the word

"intended to attract notice and impress others" is a valid
definition for ostentatious.

ostentatious != pretentious.

just because they have the same suffix doesn't make them the
same word.

and the reason i had this little quiff with you was that i
dislike it when people use "big words", the meaning
of which they don't understand, just to be... that's right,
you guessed it - ostentatious.

you could've avoided all of this by using words you
understand, like "attention-seeking", if that's what you
meant.

say what you mean.

right so i'm off. it's been fun plaidzebra.

That's what I thought.

Pretention is more claiming or acting as though you are
above everyone else and quite obviously I am. I understand
that pretention is an unjustified claim which mine isn't
however I understand that most of you lack the ability to
make this distinction so I make allowances for it.

where i live, using three syllable, commonly used, everyday
words doesn't make one "pretentious" or necessarily
"ostentatious."

i'm sure next time i'll be careful to word every post to
meet your petty expectations...

I think, Plaid', the word you wanted was afectation,
anyways. Behavior that is assumed rather than natural;
artificiality. Which is, by that token, kind of prentious
too.

I think we're splidding hairs here.
