worst live experiences?

For all those that have done gigs.

What was your worst experience live and why?

Mine would have to a series of gigs I did with a metal band
at school. They normally resulted in half the audience
leaving, or putting two fingers up at us or showing their
distain in various other ways. To be fair, we were fairly
lame, and we also always seemed to get dreadful guys at the
main mixer who clearly didn't give a fuck. They seemed to
hate electronic instruments in particular, turning me down
every time before I had even began.

Those were fun days.

I have never done a gig, but I have a short noise thing that
used to be played at the end of this rock groups gig. It
was fun to see peoples faces when it was played.

heh...:) it was a Kurt Cobain tribute concert, right after
his death. i had a rock band with my classmates....my mic
was set not loud enough so i kinda screamed for about an
hour [the sound man obviously couldn't hear everything he
should have]...and i almost lost my voice before the
end...my form mistress left the gig after 2 or 3
songs....our classmates danced in front of the stage...the
guitar solo in "teen spirit" went off-tune totally and
became a desperate improvisation....we laughed our asses off
when we later listened to the tape recording of this
gig....and that was the first time i earned some moneyz for
music

live performances are fun. you completely disregard the
audience while having your way with your instrument. i've
never really had any bad experiences, even when there was no
one to come see us play. it can be nerve wrecking if you do
it for the first time. it must suck if the audience is not
very receptive.

i played a blues/jazz improv piece in assembly one morning
in my last year of school. it was horrible because once i
got up on stage with everyone staring, the silence deafening
me, my body temperature just seemed to rocket, and i started
playing it far too fast to do myself justice.

and that was the worst part, i could bang out something
really good (my music practical examiner commended me in
particular on my improvisation) but i just flunked and ended
up getting up, shrugging and walking off the stage after a
minute or two.

fortunately, i don't think i've had any really awful
experiences performing yet...

a long time ago, when i was performing in an incredibly loud
noise-rock band, i had a sound engineer who was a real
cunt... and during the first couple of minutes after we
started playing, he started yelling at us over his mic on
the pa to turn it down. i mean, granted, the audience was
in severe pain from all the feedback, but there was no way i
was turning it down. so he came up onto the stage and
started screaming right in my ear, demanding that i turn it
down. i said yes just to get him to leave and pretended to
turn down the volume. but i think he just gave up. most of
the kids at the show actually had to leave the venue, but
there was three or four who stayed and watched up front.
that was really fun.

The worst band I used to see were "The Darkside" who always
mangaged to turn up third on the bill before, inevitably,
Mega City Four.

Some great stories here.

Strangely enough, I haven't had a bad experience live or
missed any gigs before when going to see other artists. All
the raves or live events I've seen have been really
enjoyable. How much of that is down to the music and how
much the drugs I don't know, but that's irrelevant anyway.
;)

I used to be in a band and have many horror stories.

One time someone had taken the bass drum pedal just before
we were about to start. Another time (the last time I
believe) my amplifier just gave in on stage and there was no
backup. This was the same gig where the venue managment had
decided to enforce ID crap and about 80%+ of the friends
we'd asked to come support us were thrown out. So yeah it
was quiet in many ways :| depressing as hell, actually.

Me and a mate had this electro-band and we made an album.
Actually, to say we is stretching it a bit, cause he
made all the music and I told him which tunes were crap
and/or semi-crap. Anyways, we were doing a releaseparty for
the album in Oslo, and I was going to scratch over the music
to give the pre-recorded set a "live" aspect. At the time I
had quit the band, but he needed someone to talk into the
mic and make an ass of himself onstage, so he thought he'd
let me take part.

We did a soundcheck, and the promoter acted up and said
parts of the set was unacceptable and told us to play
something from the album instead. We weren't going to argue
and accepted the order, but we weren't too pleased about him
dictating our gig.
After some bitching backstage, we were ready to roll and
started the set. I was going to introduce ourselves, but
couldn't find any mic to do so. I thought I'd use the
headset and plugged it into the mixer and started talking.
First I talked intor the wrong cup, and when I realized the
gain was too low. Someone in the crowd yelled, "I can't hear
you!" , but the next track had already started and I just
gave up.
We had never rehearsed, so my scratching was just bits
thrown in when I got bored standing on the stage doing
nothing. After a while I gave that up to and just mimed some
turntable tricks.

I feel sorry for the guys who paid to see us...

All the problems I've ever had playing live have been with
shitty in-house PA systems. They're either in mono and the
asshole behind the board can't figure out why, or I can't
hear myself. A lot of them can't handle bass well either.
This displeases me.

Now, I usually rent one for a day. Takes a little more time
in the setup process, but I don't really care.

Heh, that's how we look at the situation now, but at the
time we were a bit scared, being the first time we played in
a big city and all. And for the record, I could understand
him, cause the tunes were shit, but he's still a cunt.

at a school talent show, i absolutely bombed playing f.o.d.
by green day. our bus had gotten back late so we were
rushed, wed only practiced once beofre, and for like 20
minutes, and i had just lost my voice (i was singing). the
beginning where its all acoustic went fine, until the heavy
guitars were supposed to come in. everyone was out of time,
and you couldnt hear shit. about 30 seconds into that i just
yelled into the mic "im telling you to fuck off and die.
goodnight." and walked off stage. it was pretty fun.

I have a hundred horror stories. Something always
goes wrong.

I once had to take a 3 hour detour because of a chemical
spill and missing my slot.

I played tripping on acid once and was waaay too high to do
it (this is when I swore off acid).

I had something screw up in a set once and i ended up
playing 1 loop for about 10 minutes straight. I was packing
up my stuff afterward and there was a wadded up napkin
someone had thrown at me that said "I payed 5 dollars,
change the song!" - ouch.

tons of mono problems and no monitor problems

cleared a hundred floors..

wankers who want to talk about my setup and learn about what
i am doing as i am doing it.. that is annoying.

people who say "play something with words in it"

people tripping over a power cable and switching off all
your equipment

slot mishaps

forgetting mice/necessary cables

having cables stolen

next guy up plugs into your power strip and you have to
leave..

IDM ladies and gentlemen.

The worst was my 8th grade musical. Somehow I managed to
audition well enough for a part with a solo. I have an
awful voice (not to mention a sexy wisGonsin accent). Well,
you can guess how that went. I also missed my entrance
because i was playing cards backstage. Oh well, i don't
think the middle school audience cared.
