I apreciate lossless. I havent yet started ripping CD's as
lossless or burn as lossless yet but for certain releases
this could very well be a good choice.

I dont like how much size it takes up but that can always be
altered later.

welcome to our fun house btw!

flac is where its at.
rip with EAC in secure mode to single disc flacs with cue
sheets.
make sure you apply your cd drives read offset.

rip once. rip right.

yeah, i really like flac. sounds great.
well. what you hear is exactly what you would hear if you
listened the the original source.

dont get me wrong, i think 160-192+kbps ogg files sound
fucking amazing. and i probably most of the time couldnt
distinguish them from the origional source in double blind
test, but thats not the point.
say i rip all my cds to mp3, or ogg, or whatever, now. and
then in 2 years theres a new magical quantum computing audio
compression scheme (or whatever) that sounds way better and
is way smaller. well my only choice would be to go mp3->new
format or ogg->new format. and going from ANY lossy format
to any format, is less then ideal. of cours mp3 at 360kbps
isnt going to be THAT bad to transcode to something else,
but it is not ideal. so i would have to spend all the time
re ripping.

with flac, i have 60GB of flacs ripped perfectly, of a
little over 300 cds, and i can automate a transcoding from
flac to any other future format, and have as good as a
result as if i ripped to the new format directly.

so flac is amazing for that.

Oh in 10 years time when your prized CDs are scratched to
shit and crumbled into oxidised dust you'll come crying to
us lossless archivers with your shamed head hung low and
with red faced humily ask "please can you do me a copy
please".

wow u guys are fast to respond ! lmao a few idm sharers from
the DC Lossless Trading Hub told me about this site today,
said u guys like to chop it up about electronic and idm
music so i came :) Im glad more and more peeps are getting
into Lossless. I agree with DennisPearce about how high
bitrate OGG or MP3 sound amazingly well but that FLAC offers
not only the best quality but flexibilty.

b6662966 i am glad we are on the same level.
as other have said, welcome.
yeah i used to be into the DC++ stuff a bit, works pretty
well for closed groups sort of thing.
flac for future foward flexibility.

well yeah just about being fast to respond.
this isnt like most forums/messageboards, in that its more
like slightly delayed active discussions, than the kind of
message board where threads arnt very active and only are
posted to with actual interesting posts

i'm interested in this format, it seems a really good
idea
if some day you have to say goodbye to your music
collection

if you have low speed internet connection (like me) it could
be really awful to download/upload this format,

for my own private use I still rip my cd's at 320kbps cbr
mp3's

:(

i see the point of it, theorically - but practically
i think it's kind of stupid.

it takes a lot of disk space, which is not free, and
of course a lot of time to download if you want to download
it... and if you want "perfect", lossless quality, logically
you'd have to get "perfect" audio equipment also. is there
anything like that in the world? every speaker, every
headphones, have a particular sound... you'll never get a
100% accurate restitution of the sound. and you'll have to
have "perfect" ears also (though of course i believe you if
you say you can make the difference between mp3 and
lossless). and "perfect" conditions to listen to the
music... last but not least, the sound of a cd is not
"perfect" either. if the cd format was lossless, we wouldn't
have sacd and all those other new formats now would we...
besides we all know some cds that have crappy
mastering/crappy sound.

so, ok, you might say you don't want perfection but to get
as close as possible to it. it's up to you to decide if it's
worth it then... for me it's not; mp3 is a lossy format,
sure, but i think what you lose in quality is way
compensated by the disk space you save. and if i love the
music and if the cd is findable, then i'll just buy it. i'll
have the cd and real artwork and all...

of course cds can scratch or be stolen - but computers can
crash and then you lose all data. you'll take risks either
way.

now if you have a really really big hard drive (and
really really fast connection if you download), then fine
for you... : )

the thing is, hard drives are progressively getting bigger
and bigger and internet bandwith is always increasing. so in
the long run, the file size won't matter. there was a time
(in the early-mid 90's) when 5-10mb files were considered
big.

I think the time is right for FLAC because you can always
rip your cd's as both FLAC and MP3 and put the FLACs on DVDR
(about 0.36 euro per DVDR in Germany) for storage and the
MP3s on your harddrive for sharing and playing

I'd love to use FLAC to have ripped all my stuff. But, as
uzim pointed out, it's impractical. Until hard drives are at
1TB minimum then I'm staying away from it. In fact, what's
the point if mp3 players won't have enough storage for a
good amount of flacs. I'm out of space on my 40 gig iPod
using 192kbps mp3s.

then you just rip the flacs into mp3s, exclusively for your
mp3 player. problem solved.
