I'm thinking about picking up some legit software. It
boils down to reason or cubase...i'm a newbie so i think
reason would probably better? Also the rex drum player, can
you make your own rex files? i have tons of breaks
collected now and i'd like the ability to use them instead
of repurchasing them from propellerhead. will i have to buy
recycle to be able to cut them up? just curious.

you need something called Recycle to create rex files. you
can take any sample from rex file and put it into redrum
machine for further messing up.
i would hit reason, that is easier for a start, it will give
you an idea what are you capable of.
cubase is not really a sequencer, its rather for audio
mastering.

Reason is definately better than Cubase for a beginner IMO.

You can make your own .rex files (and it's great to do so),
but you need another bit of software from them, "Recycle".
Bit harsh, I rekcon it should be bundled myself, but there
you go...

eh. if you will buy reason copy and register it, im pretty
sure you will get recycle aswell, well maybe for some little
monieys.

yup,but it takes a lot of time.

i still didn't cup up all of my breaks, cos there are a lot
of them.

i started using rex files a lot nowdays.

well you can always do it manually, but that is time
consuming but you can do it with any basic wavform
editor.... although some inevitabley will be better than
others.

maybe i'll buy reason outright, and have my buddy buy
recycle or split the cost with me...i agree something like
that should be included, even if its a lite version or
something ya know. Didn't Luke Vibert use reason for one of
his recent albums?

i'm only buying b/c whenever i download software like this
it never works properly. the only thing i've ever had run
properly is traktor and fruity loops, but even fruity loops
synths and slicer are just demo's and never save any of the
data in my save files

I've heard Vibert used Reason for drums but not the synths.

I would think you'd get going faster with Reason. It's
basic, but when you reach the limit, you can get Cubase and
hook it up via ReWire. By then, I would think you'd have
learned enough to tackle Cubase.

Good luck on your decision anyways

i dont like drRex that much, i prefer loading sounds in
ReDrum and then putting the hits in through the sequencer
like drRex

the difference is as far as i can tell you cant alter the
volume of each hit in rex, just each sample.

drill powers

latest thing ive done with reason

You can use the velocity bars to alter the volume of each
hit in DrRex, like in any of the other modules.

Oh, sorry, you need to adjust the velocity controls/knobs on
DrRex for it to have any effect.

yes you can't do it per hit on the .rex player. its a bit
limited in that respect really :-/

the velocity window on the editing window has no effect on
the dr Rex, right?

!

?
right!?

Ok, in lack of words I'll put it in pictures and audio.
Below you will see what I meant. Here's the
corresponding loop

adjusting the amp dial affects the controller lane though
not the velocity window?

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-04-28 00:53 [#01578426]

Dude, the way your phrasing that almost makes nonsence. If
you adjust the amp dial the way vlari has exhibited, then
when you are adjusting the velocity indicators in the
sequencer window as vlari has exhibited, it will make the
note quietest at the lowest point, and loudest at the
highest point. If you turn the knob the other way, it does
the exact oposit (making the highest point the quietest and
vice versa).

You can do the same with the redrum player, in the sequencer
view like that, only its kinda stupid, because whats the
point of using a drum machine layout? (although independant
sends for auxiliary channels one and two for your beats is a
definately benefit).

LOOK:

adjusting the value of the velocity in the velocity window
(the red one) makes no difference to the velocity of each
individual hit/segment for the Dr .Rex. i am well aware you
can do this with the amp dial, but that is slightly limited.
with the other units on the rack in Reason, if you adjust
the velocity in the velocity window, it affects the value,
but for the .rex it does not.

here is some proof. the dynamics of bar one are the same as
bar two

here you can hear the proof.

are we clear now?

I can hear that the dynamics are the same, but have you made
the velocity affect any of the parameters? If they are all
centered/zero'd it's obvious it has no effect.

Actually I don't care, if you're satisfied with the way you
work, I'm not going to say that you're doing anything wrong.
I just wanted to share a trick to ease the process.

I don't see how an instrument joiner and a mastering suite
can reduce the limits of Reason...
