tech question for mac musicians

Can I link up an old Mac g3 smurf tower running os9.2 with
a brand new mac laptop running the latest mac os?

I will want to run Cubase 5.1 on both machines and have them
linked together and running in tandem, so I will need to use
classic mode on the laptop.

I will be using the G3 for midi sequencing and audio
recording whilst the laptop will be used for soft synths and
plug ins.
Ideally I'd be able to drag n drop parts from one computer
into another,

If this is possible and if so what would be the method to
achieve it?,

Hmmm, i am not sure about that at all. I imagine that both
setups would have to be running the same operating systems
though.

I'm prepared to install 9.1 on the laptop if I need to.

I know nothing about macs to be honest. I think that might
be a general thing. I could of course be completely wrong.

I don't know if there's some magic way to connect the
computers in your setup other than MIDI, and I don't know if
that would even work either. I wish I knew more about that
stuff :(

Have you looked at the forums on apple.com? There might be
some people with the same problems, or have experiences with
it.

I can sync two Cubases with MIDI but this would only be a
partial soloution, ideally I would want to swap audio and
midi parts between the two systems with the minimum of fuss,
I have a feeling I can use firewire to achieve this but I'm
just making sure before I get the laptop.

I'll check the Apple board and Synthzone but I thought I'd
check here first cos it's the board I use the most, cheers.

Yes, you can do this the operating systems should make
little or no difference. To be on the safe side transfer all
the files you want to keep to the newer computers' hard
drive and erase all other programs from the old one exept
Cubase.

It would be a whole lot easier if you invest in a mac mini.

how do I do this and what's a mac mini? I don't have the
space for another monitor in my studio, does it have a built
in one like an I-mac?

Oh and there is a lot of software I will need to keep
running on my G3, all hardware editing stuff that won't run
on OSx, will this cause any problems?

I'm guessing if you've streamlined os9, and have no problems
with the current configuration it'll be fine.

If you were going or are plannig to go pure osx, you might
want to have a peek at XPostFacto which enables you to
run osx on you Smurf. I have it on an old 8600/250 and it
works (slowly), but I think the G3 will handle it.

I'm reluctant to go pure OSx because all the software I have
is for 9 and isn't even available on X (stuff like MESA and
Nord modular editor ect, all pretty essential for what I'm
doing).

I have steamlined my system and it runs perfectly apart from
the odd rare Cubase crash, I just wanted to link up another
computer to increase the amount of plug ins, soft synths and
audio channels I can use.

Is it just a case of linking up the machines with Firewire?
are there any extensions, control panels, apps etc I would
need to do this?

cheers for the link, I must say they look very cool (and
very cheap), it's a shame they don't come with a monitor
built in but I guess that would be defeating the object, out
of interest why would that be easier to link up than a
laptop?

They would be just the same to hook up but at half the
price!
You could use one monitor if you get one of these gizmos or
similar.

a few things. classic doesnt support midi at all so cubase
will not even boot. there is a fully functional osx editor
for your nord available, it's beta but it's as good as the
old one. you can get it here:-

http://www.clavia.se/G2/Nord_Modular_OSX_Editor.htm

if i were you i'd just network the 2 computer to transfer
information, you could also look into creating a MAX patch
to sync the clocks in cubase. i'm sure that would be
possible. I'm reckon you could prolly get most of your
software on OSX now, metasynth etc just recently got ported.

hope this in some way helps, good luck!

I've managed to get Cubase 5.1 up and running in classic
mode on somebody elses I-Mac, MIDI seemed to work OK with
OMS.
I'm quite happy to have an original OS9.2 running on a
partitioned hard drive though if that's what it takes (I'm
presuming that's possible on a laptop?),

Would Networking the two computers interfere with Cubase and
OMS? (unfortunately I need to use OMS because my MIDI
interface requires it), I've noticed that you can't have the
"Appletalk" extensions open whilst using OMS/Cubase, are
these required for networking?

Beware, newer apple powerbooks/ibook can't be booted in os 9
anymore. the firmware only allows os X.

Appletalk vs OMS is a bitch, and I don't think networking
with it is possible. I could be wrong though.

Hmmm , looks like this could be more of a hassle than I
thought, as long as I can get Cubase 5.1 running in classic
I should be Ok provided the Midi sync works.

If I can't network the two computers I guess I can always
transfer data by burning discs etc, would have preffered
drag n drop though

looks good, I could still have the OMS/Networking problem
though if I use my G3 Cubase to sequence , also it doesn't
say wether OS9 soft synths are supported (I know they aren't
supported in Cubase 6.

I would like to run Cubase on the laptop to master stuff as
well, I plan to record my PCI soundcard on the G3 then
transfer the files over to the laptop for mixing and
mastering.
