how was the release of hangable auto bulb, rdj album and
girl boy ep?

my first "expected release" was druqks (i cant belive it was
already four years ago) and all those rumours and
expectatiion on analord make me think about how could it be
with those special albums...

was there so much expectation?
how did you live the announcement, the releasing, the new
sound of afx, etc...?
what did you think about it/them at first listening?
what did you feel from such albums so different from his
previous i care?

Hab was first, if imnot wrong. how was it took, as it is
should not be and easy listening in 95 and it was only 3000
copies or kinda...
blablabla

you understand what i mean...
i want your experiences mates!
howhenwhatwhy

it's a lot different from how it was. only a few years back
you didn't get to hear it before you bought it, now it's all
too easy to get hold of a copy before its release date.

I don't think there was any announcement of HAB, I only saw
it one day by chance in Sister Ray records. *Gets out
slippers* unless you hung around the record shops you didn't
really know what was coming, and you couldn't really rely on
the NME or the "Dance Music" press to let you know.
"Girl/Boy" was a classic, but I didn't like the b-sides. RDJ
Album I liked but wasn't as good as ICBYD, too short and
samey. I went to see him play about this time and he
performed "Come to Daddy", I thought "Yes, that's a good
track, I bet the fucker won't release it".

mmm interesting... at the begining it was like this for
me... not getting info, just going to shops and finding new
and unknown afx releases (released long time ago tho...).
that was a nice time of freedom and surprises...ah!

I read about the release of the first Hangable Auto Bulb in
Melody Maker (this was when it wasn't utter utter shite) and
that it was going to be very limited, so I quickly reserved
a copy at my local indie store. Bought it the day it was
released.

With the second ep I did the same but all the copies the
store got were flawed and unsaleable. Luckily I was going to
Newcastle later that week and found a copy in Volume records
or I'd have been stuffed.

It was pretty exciting at the time. I read about it in the
Melody Maker too, and got geared up to visit my indiestore
(in the way only a 15 year old with a newfound joy in
recordcollecting can). I had no idea if the shop had gotten
HAB1 yet, but me and the shopkeeper had a verbal agreement
about him reserving me a copy of anything Aphex he got hold
of. Luckily my trip was not in vain and I took the train
home with HAB & Donkey Rhubarb promo.

Same story with HAB 2 (Except the promo)

During the next couple of months, I saw both copies of HAB
sitting in the Techno/Ambient section. And one day I bought
them again out of pity and lack of other interesting
records.

I didn't know what to expect, but I read about this new
mutant form of jungle/drum n bass, so I had a little
feeling. But it was just a smarter or more tounge in cheek
type of jungle, so it was no struggle to get into it.

That's it I guess.

Not played @ 33, which I started doing when I got it (and
still do). But maybe on 45, yes.

would anybody agree that hangable autobulb 1 was the first
"drill & bass" (i hate the term, but im using it anyway)
record?
if this is completely incorrect i'd love for somebody to
list other albums sounding similar from before or around the
same time period.

Didn't Tom Jenkinson do some stuff on Spymania that predated
HAB? Atleast Luke Vibert had his Plug moniker that was drill
(atleast in the musicpress at the time), and the Wagon
Christ Redone EP had the first RDJ drill remix and that was
released before HAB, if my memory servers me right.

Start listening to Vlari. Actually hack your own head off
and film it as some sort of comment on people accepting
things they see as being real.

"Didn't Tom Jenkinson do some stuff on Spymania that

HAB?"

was burning tree the compilation that collected these
together?if not, have they been re-released on anything?

Burning n Tree was a compilation of those EPs, yes.

I've heard various arguments. Usually that it was the Plug
EPs or Aphex's Remix of Spotlight, or the early Squarepusher
stuff. Lets just say a few people were doing similar things
at the same time.

i found an aphex dj set in chicago @ the metro in august of
1994, i think, on slsk where he plays weird old folk/pop for
half and hour before firing an universal indicator song, and
to my shock he plays mashed potatoes and wabby legs or
custodian discount from HAB!

now maybe the date is incorrect but if those were already
completed in august 1994 it's even more ahead of it's time
than i thought

Interesting, but it's not unlikely that he made those tracks
in 94. It can take a long time before tracks appear on a
official release.

Dear old Berwick Street... Sister Ray, Selectadisc,
Reckless, ... I never bought anything in Ambient Soho
though, they only ever seemed to have 4 records in stock.

That's Selectadisc in Nottingham I reckon. I spent 4 hours
and £110 in there when I went last year. I only went in for
a quick look.

no, there are only 2 stores, 1 in london which is very
small, and one in nottingham which is smallish but has a
large selection of hard to find cds and a nice vinyl section
upstairs. it won the best indie record store last year.

It's one of the best places for vinyl in the country! Though
I'd say that Vinyl Exchange in Manchester is better for CDs.
Or it was, not been for ages. Too long.

Yes, I think so. Also Pelicnneck is/was there. (Pelicanneck
being the physical Boomkat)
