## Help XLT ##

offline virginpusher from County Clare on 2005-03-23 11:00 [#01541757]

I noticed that XLT isnt done.

Perhaps we the members can help? I figured since we all
listen to various type of music and such we could provide
sound samples for images or maybe help in webpage stuff.

I figured it would help phobs since i am sure he is very
very busy.

What do you guys think?

I mean once the site is done then the mystery of the black
dot is unvieled!

I agree, to be fair, XLT has lost a bit of ground to the
chaps at Discogs.com and unless Phoboid is planning
something extra sexy I wouldn't bother too much developing
the discography. I think the messageboard covers it really,
I don't know what else is needed on this site that can't be
found easily elsewhere.

no way... the xlt discography has a much better interface,
content and no ads - it's much better than discogs.com

Phob has said before that he's willing to accept offers of
scans for records that aren't in the discog. He just won't
let us add them ourselves which I suppose is fair enough.

really?

I like discogs more. to me it's a cleaner lay-out.

and I really hate how tiny the scroll-windows are on the
xlt-discog interface thingy.

yeah, i think the white, black and blue is too "i used an
html template-wizard to make this"... i also don't see any
soundclips... the xlt one has better and larger scans,
including the back covers and extra stuff like that. not to
mention the advertisements in the middle of the album's
information. that's really annoying.

i think once xlt's discog is finished, it will be the best
one around.

xltronic may have better and larger scans, but how many does
it actually have?

discogs simply wins on the amount of records they have.

xltronic's discog only has a very small part of the records
I own.

(it'll be 2020 before any Hafler Trio record besides the
ae-h3o-record will appear, for example.)

only about 25% of the records i own are in the xltdiscogs,
whereas 95% can be found at discogs.com ....phoby is really
limiting himself if he intends to do a discog for *only*
records on certain labels, or for *only* music he deems to
be idm, whatever his current system is. the only advantage
the xltdiscog seems to have is that we can discuss releases
after we're done reading about them.

but it's only electronic music. That's the point of the
site....

85% of the music i own is electronic

oh lets see...lemon jelly, avalanches, mr oizo, a lot of
stuff on skint records, stuff on ninja tune, lots of
compilations (does xlt even have any compilations?) and
thats not including records that i wouldnt consider
'electronic', such as dj yoda...

offline Bob Mcbob on 2005-03-24 07:15 [#01542603]

i havent heard about 80% of the artists on xlt, im not as
'deeply' into idm as many of the people here, i just know
the big labels like warp, planet mu and rephlex...

offline i_x_ten from arsemuncher on 2005-03-24 07:22 [#01542609]

yes the xlt discog has releases by artists for some labels,
but not if they've released on a different label not
listed, giving a somewhat limited discography of individual
artists

offline Bob Mcbob on 2005-03-24 07:23 [#01542610]
Points: 9939 Status: Regular

phoby should either stick to those big labels, or else cover
*everything* like discogs.com does

Aside from the big names liek Aphex and Squarepusher etc
he's staying away from the commercial stuff and with good
reason. There's many a discography that covers those artists
and for some of them their labels site does a good job of it
but for many of the ones here there's no discographies
present for them and phob is filling that hole. Maybe in the
future when the discog is closer to completion he'll
consider adding the ones you've mentioned but for now he's
sticking to the "unknowns" and providing a service for them.

well im not expecting phoby to cover them, but there are
still some idm artists/releases that arent covered..perhaps
they are just small gaps that will be filled in later...
