hahahah I love him. Not in a gay way.

I've grown fond of his hilarious shenanigans and in the last
episode I felt really sorry for him (with the hair in the
cinema).

is about "idiots". you idiot.

I'm sure this isn't what you were saying, but feeling sorry
for a character you are 'supposed' to hate just means either
(a) you're not strictly supposed to hate him all the time,
or (b) the tv making people did bad. Yes?

i was meaning to say that to the horsefactory due to his
sighing.

I havent seen the episode your talking about yet, but I
think if he was to be a realistic character of an idiot you
would obviously feel sorry for him sometimes.

offline horsefactory from 💠 (United Kingdom) on 2005-03-08 16:37 [#01526042]
Points: 14867 Status: Regular | Followup to Dannn_: #01526014

but i don't see him as a realistic character, he seems more
of an exaggeration of, umm, loads of shit things - i'm not
saying that because a character is portrayed as an idiot you
should never sympathise with them - for example i find
programmes like alan partridge or marion & geoff relatable
and even profound at times - it's just that with nathan
barley, especially considering the episodes of 'cunt' from
tvgohome, i get the impression that he's supposed to
represent everything the creators find hateful and not have
any redeeming features, anyway, i'm really tired, and i'm
talking rubbish, so i'll go to bed

sort of cunt. Easy.

don't be so quick to call sumeone a cunt for sympathising
with a fictional character.
I find the character of Nathan Barley funny because of the
way people react around him. He's so desperate to be 'cool'
and 'with it' that's it's pathetic. And when he gets it
wrong you feel sorry for him because he becomes like a
naive child.

Read properly what Horsefactory said, the character is a
gross exaggeration. If you view the programme on a "soap
opera" level you're as fucked as Barley.

That sounds horribly arrogant to me. I agree that the Cunt
tv listings suggested he is a worthless fuck withy no
redeeming features and I sort of expected the programme to
be like that, but it really isn't. I don't think you can
make a show about a guy who is completely dispicable, you
can't just watch someone being a pathetic cunt every week
and not feel some sympathy, especially because I think
everyone without exception will probably see quite a lot of
the actions of Nathan Barley and think, fucking hell I'm
almost as bad as he is.

For example, Nathan Barley might be found watching a
programme a few times, assuming he is the target audience
and hence fully understands it above and beyond anyone who
shows any difference of opinion, and then ranting about how
other people are idiots.

I don't think you can make a show about a guy who is
completely dispicable

probably not, and you'd have a point if he was the sole
focus of the program, but there are loads of other things
going on that mean you're not just watching someone being a
pathetic cunt every week.

you can equate me to nathan barley with as many fictitious,
overblown examples as you like, but if you watch the episode
this thread is about you'll see how obviously you're
supposed to sympathise with him, only to see him go back to
being the same cunt as usual seconds afterward, which is why
i don't think he's meant to be anything more than a gross
exaggeration.

If you think "fucking hell, I'm as bad as he is" you're a
cunt. And, by your logic, you'd agree you're a cunt. Whether
that makes you a bigger cunt that the most MAHOOSIVE CUNT
that ever was I don't know, but if you're trying to make out
that by knowing you're a cunt you're less of a cunt, I'd
have to tell you you're sadly mistaken.

hold your horses

i thought ashcroft is the centre of the program, not barley.
barley fits in, barley has mates, ashcroft refuses to be an
idiot, he is the loner, he is the sane. he got caught
playing cock muff bumhole, all his facial expressions are of
confusion, uncertainty being in the vast minority,
questioning his own sanity. we've all been there, i
certainly have.

Isn't it interesting that even though it's given on a plate
you still get the twats that think they're "in on it"
missing it by a fucking mile. Isn't that... THAT....
genius....

offline Dannn_ from United Kingdom on 2005-03-08 18:20 [#01526169]

you both makes goods points.

horsefactory - I will have to watch that episode... if as
you say you feel sorry for him only realise it was misplaced
because he is a 'moneyed shit' then there should be no
problem that razorblade felt sorry for him and then we're
both right aren't we?

dog_belch - I have to disagree. IMHOtep you are missing the
point, I don't think this is supposed to yield a triumphant
'I'm a better person than him!' reaction at all and it
should probably be a discouraging journey into 'I'm as much
of a cunt as everyone else'. I thought this was illustrated
by introducing Barley as an idiot and then showing him
saying other people are idiots.

I just saw an episode.

I can truthfully say that I would like to hit every
character in this programme squarely in the face, except
maybe Dan (who does indeed seem to be the real lead
character).

and Nathan Barley truly is a cunt, nothing more.
