Secrets and Honesty

Sometimes you will be talking candidly to a friend, and
they will let loose something sincere in their actions or
the way they speak or in what they say. I love these
moments. Every time this happens, I learn to respect each of
my friends more, reguardless of what they say (and I have
known some pretty twisted people). Anyways, a friend of mine
showed me this website for this art project that somebody
was doing, where they left these blank postcards in a
gallery and people were expected to write a secret that they
have never told anybody on it, and mail it back to the
gallery (or something like that). Some of them are
suprisingly candid and dark, although a few too many women
saying "I am totally straight but I want to fuck my best
friend" Anyways, here is the link;

these are nice. the abortion-one made me feel queesy.

but I can't believe that people actually did all the artsy
stuff on those.

Well, the first couple ones were for the show, the rest are
actually sent in to the website. This kind of stuff really
appeals to artsy people. Even when they don't sign their
name, they still look for attention, methinks.

I also think the guy only posts the interesting ones.

I think a lot of the artiness takes away from the impact the
message could have.

I think I'd rather see just plain handwriting on a card.

that said, the abortion-one had an impact on me because of
the text combined with the colours.

I also like the one below, although I do still think most
would be stronger if there's no distractions. it kind of
makes it look too planned, makes it feel undirect.

this one, for example, hits home because of the simplicity:

this reminds me of this more voyeuristic "found art" book by
negativland. it's called, "DEATHSENTENCES OF THE
POLISHED AND STRUCTURALLY WEAK"

i've got it. it's really intense at times. highly
recommended even if you don't like negativland's music.

that's a good example - the message is heavy, but the idea
that someone sat down and chose a colour for each word kind
of dampens it for me.

I totally agree. But the artsy ones are also the more
standard of responses, and it ends up making the more boring
ones stand out more. Especially when they say something like
"I talked someone into suicide".

that's true. and some of the artsy ones are nice too.

good work posting this one. :)

These are quite interesting, but the way they've been put
together makes them feel a bit "sloganeery" to me... like
some half-arsed jenny holzer or something. That said, i
still enjoy seeing things like this, it's a nice little
insight i suppose.

I remember a film by Gillian Wearing that went along similar
lines, she placed an advert in loot asking for people to be
filmed confessing their secrets wearing disguises. One man
slowly confessing how he had been in love with his sister
for 30 years was horrifying, just so human. That was
awesome, this is just quite cool.

I like some of Jenny Holzer's work.

with her it really hangs on the text used, I think.

Thats negitivlands found object in car project?

That was a really fascinating idea. I never actually had a
chance to see it, but the idea has always interested me.
Thnx for reminding me about that.

Qrter; Yeah. Sometimes you can have something artsy,
and valid at the same time. Thnx :)

There is this artist exhibiting in this gallery next to my
apartment that finds things in alleyways, referbishes them
and puts them back, then takes a picture. The neatest one
was a picture of clothes all scattered about beside a
dumpster, then the next picture they were washed ironed and
folded, but placed in the same place. I love stuff like
that.

I kind of like her stuff myself, i think it has more impact
outside of the gallery because you're not expecting to find
it on a billboard or a neon sign or something. With this,
it's just a link to a website, it doesn't really make me
stop and take pause (like finding a postcard / artwork like
this would in real life).

Mmmm. Arty.

it's kind of hard to not recognise Holzer's work as art
though.

it looks very... mmmm. arty.

Her early stuff was just like "lost cat"-style posters i
believe... i think the billboard thing was a bad example. I
actually like her work before she calmed down a bit and went
into gallery gubbins, precisely because it doesn't
look very arty.
