This will make it easier for people to feel cool because they like john peel. Teenage Kicks is one of the worst Undertones songs by the way.

the ruts, sham 69, stiff little fingers, sex pistols, buzzcocks... not their best tracks, but ok...
the rest of that new wave and ska nonsense - no thanks.

i preferred 'a good heart' or 'you little thief'. even that record he did with vince clarke is better.

I don't know enough to say anything, but as far as I know Peel had a very broad taste over the years, music from all over the world of every style, and that album is a very narrow selection of one rather confined area of music.

It a list of the 'famous' tunes that he liked which is a shame but it's a nice compilation though. I'd have preferred a nice peels session compilation.

Exactly, a cross selection of Peel session tracks, hell even a random selection would be eclectic and aces, that's a much better idea than this frankly upsetting tracklisting.

The more I look at the tracklisting the more I see glaring omissions. I'm starting to get depressed.

i think one cd wouldnt be enough to give you a good idea of what his taste was. it would be much more than that. best left alone i'd say.

Probably weren't allowed God save the Queen. That said, Virgin records did re-release it so I can't see why not. Pretty Vacant is still a big Pistols tunes but you're right. Anarchy would've made a better choice.

I actually think its kind of represents a basic misunderstanding of what made John Peel special, as would any compilation CD probably. The way I see it, Peel was about good music coming from any direction, and just enjoying the music and not putting yourself into a box (e.g. I only like punk). In fact he encouraged variety in a way that you could never put into 40 tracks, I don't think you were ever supposed to like every track he played, but you knew to give it a chance because his opinion on music was valuable to me.

Jesus christ, that's the narrowest interpretation of peel's taste i've ever seen. He used to play all kinds of epic japanese ambient pieces, old dub and Banging Choonz of the happy hardcore variety as well as loads of wicked guitar stuff around at the moment... It wasn't just a few quasi-punk bands from the 70s repeated ad nauseum. Horrible.
This is bad news, man.

Yeah, i think it'd be ace to have a load of festive 50 box sets, maybe even one for the peelennium. I doubt it'd ever happen, but at least it'd leave a proper legacy, unlike this cash-in tripe.
