whenever i try to open a folder window, it brings up a message box saying Visual C++ Runtime Library Error or some shit, that there's been a buffer overflow in Explorer.exe. Then explorer crashes. So i basically can't navigate my harddrive / network drives... anyone encounter this before? |

sounds like the wingate virus i had it where if i double clicked c it would open teh cmd prompt and i had to right click / explorer to go anywhere |

this is a virus 100% for sure. i can only recommend that you reinstall windows xp and make sure you have all updates for windows and your anti virus |

I had a similar error to this where it was actually a bad codec installation. |

wait a sec! have you recently installed a mp3/ogg converter porgram? I downloaded one once and explorer crashed every time I tried I opened a window. The reason was, the program changed menus and it had fucked up so whenever you went into a window it crashed kinda thing. |

nope don't think so.. and at the same time i really don't think it's a virus. i'm not a dummie, i don't use IE, my virusscanner updates itself automatically every day from college servers and it scans everything i download. it's really weird. i even tried re-installed SP2 to see if it'd fix it, no joy. |

i use a uni virus scanner and it didnt pick up the virus for some reason even though it was update , its worth checking it out and if its not that then id ont have a clue, ive also had fucked up video codecs that crash my explorer. turned out it was cos i dindt have an up to date ffdshow! |
