ive been trying to get it to work and it just fucks me about. I cant get it to recognise midi at all, there's only about 3 different settings and none of them work. And what the fuck does it mean bus 1 bus 2 bus 3 bus 4? How do i know?! WHy it doesnt respond, i shall never know.
Anyway, does anyone know something cool that can replace reason (i.e. make lots of cool sounds and work properly) that isnt reason and isnt shitty halion? Me have mac.

Snap.
Reason isn't so bad (I like it a lot). But the midi implementation is poor. It has gotten better and it's meant to be better in 3, but it still sucks. Floops, for its shortcomings, is still my favourite midi host. But that's PC only :-.

Have you done anything with the Audio Midi Setup program? I recently got an usb midi controller keyboard and I had no problems whatsoever getting it recognized in Reason.

You can get things to work in it, it's just the mapping of controls could be done a lot better. Something that used to happen a lot (I think it has been fixed in 2.5) is the way that when you remap a midi control, it doesn't by default, remove collisons. So eg, you end up using your controller and alter the resonance on your subtractor, as intended, but then it also plays around with panning on you redrum.
I'd rather have it like floops, right click on button/dial and click "learn midi" twiddle the appropriate knob on the midi controller and you're away. Perhaps they could add a seperate "midi setting patch" for each instrument, so you could save your favoured setting for each instrument. Eg once you've got a good subtractor one written, you can recall it later in any track on any other subtractor. Maybe even have it so you can set different channels for each instance of that particular machine?

I have not encountered those problems you speak of, but I'm running 2.5 so I guess that's why. But I see what you mean, I'd love to have some midi-learn button in Reason. I'm still in the learning phase, so at the moment I'm content with how things are.

I will stand by reason but i think my methods of writing are different to everyone elses, i only use midi for playing some of the melodic parts and for smooth cutoff and resonance automation. This may change in the future though... Anyway...
I honestly find that logic is a bit too fiddly for my tastes i much prefer cubase sx to it actually (never thought i would say it!)
I would say use that and reason maybe. I have always found midi implementation to be a headache though. That is why i got a usb controller keyboard as it lets me get on with the important things.

i think i might get a simpler midi usb keyboard. At the moment im using a triton le through a firewire external sound card. I think thats making things a bit too complicated for simple reason. New software - 200 quid, new midi usb keyboard - 90 quid. Hmm. Problem is that if i get a new usb keyboard and it doesnt work, i spend 290 quid. Ah well. Solution - suicide... or bank robbery. For now however, im trying to get a copy of rave 92 on CD. Man that was a good album. Thanks for the help you bunch of funky monks
