(...quote attached as image below...)
what do you think of this? agree? disagree? do you think Autechre's music changes from listen to listen and some other musics don't, or vice-versa? does music always do the same effect to you? does music never do the same effect to you?

confield always sounds different because it is that abstract. it refers to nothing, so the listener is thrown back upon his self.

I've got loads of music that I loved instantly and went off, loads that I loved instantly and never get bored of, loads that I didn't like much at first but which grew on me until I did love it. I guess it all depends on the music and the listener.
I've not got so much that I disliked at first and never got to like. Although I've sold a few of those, maybe that means that if you buy something and want to like it, eventually you can make yourself like it.
Also I've noticed that quite often electronic musicians don't have much hair.

i guess what the quote is getting at is the idea of having a number of focal points (rhythms?) in a single recording that overlay

thats got to be a tricky thing to pull off as were trained to appreciate agreeable components. but you could say that a multi tiered focus reflects more 'natural' circumstances, perhaps the sound of traffic mixed with trees and birds.

i think at times ae's stuff works as hip hop, other times it works as ambient and other times as..., but i think the different levels they are talking about are in an abstract sense, without getting to involved it can function as architecture, or as sound manipulation, or as emotion etc... - get what i am saying? i relate ae's work to the iteas of abstract impressionism, and without calling it abstract music.

it does sound different to me depending on my mood, but it's often a difference between "cold and boring technical wank", "cold and annoying/agressive, turn that shit off man", "meh : | does nothing to me", "yeah, interesting - won't listen to the whole album though" and "whoa, trippy!".
the rare moments where i find it trippy (i.e. where i really enjoy it) might be different each listen but they're too rare for me to compare really...

but all music works like this for me, not just ae's - i think at its best - music is abstract - it can completely take on a whole other meaning than the one it is presented in, it is purely interpretive and takes on different meanings from one listener to the next. it serves different functions to each listener, even the artist who created it can see it in different ways at times - people might say "pop music is boring" but at times it might be interpreted differently or experienced on some other level that is not so boring for the listener. its when that art becomes propaganda that i think it gets boring after a bit.

It seems each LP marks a different segment throughout the history of Autechre's works. Perhaps this sort of change keeps me interested in their new releases, in that I don't know exactly what to expect, as far as attributes of the sound are regarded. Of course, this works similarly of any artist. However, while some artists seem to maintain static techniques, and others tend to experiment with new methods and then revert back to their conventional ones, Autechre seem to have a steady line of change throughout their works.
Not sure if this makes much sense to anyone else..

I didnt like ep7 when I first heard it, I thought it was just complicated nonsense
but I was just listening to it at a glance, when I actually took some time to give'r with it, I liked it a lot
and pachi, I know exactly what you're saying, each album seems like the same mixture of the one before it and the one after it, its a very perfect progression

Their music does work on different levels. I just tested it.
First of all I listened to it on the ground floor, and it worked. Then I climbed half way up the stairs and it still worked, then on the first floor and it worked there too.

This topic and that magazine article needs to be changed to "Our music works at different levels, upside down and possible underwater..."
I will write to the publishers and get them to reissue that issue with the amendments made.

it can be bad to read into what autechre say about their music.
one reads the info and can really only decode based upon what one already knows about the creation process (which is very, very little) and you just are sort of stuck.
i mean, besides the fact that they use a sequencer, there's little that you know about the creation process, how the sounds are produced, and etc. it's bad to really read into what they say because it will take you nowhere unless you actually flip open one of their laptops and see what's going on.
the idm/braindance/smart-electronica community is based on this. the 'mystery' of the music that the artists inadvertenly create.

qrter> hahah yeah that too
but when you think about it, if the idm/braindance/smart-tronica community really had 100% knowledge of how the artists make their music, like, if there was a webpage that had detailed graphs of how each song is composed, how each sound is synthesized, then there would be no community. at least not on the internet. well the artists wouldn't get much praise. the album would come out, everyone would trickle over it for a few weeks, and then come the questions: "so when are the graphs for X song coming out? have autechre released those graphs yet? i want to know how they made this sound, how they manipulated X function, etc." and it would just be fucking stupid

This is the stupidest, most pretentious quote ever; I hope they didn't say it willingly (tortured?). By nature of the human brain, everything is interpreted at multiple levels, and similarly multiple levels of meaning embed themselves in any communication. Oh god this quote makes me want to kill people. ok shower time.
