Acid...

Why is the genre of music called acid? I know the synth
with high resonance and tunes that are often in sixteenth
notes is the heart and soul (or so is my understanding). But
why is this sound given the name acid?
I dont see how it relates to lsd... so I'm assuming its
something else entirely.

you ever tasted something acidy? then you'd know because the
sound resembles the taste of acid perfectly imo.

I believe the TB-303 was the main ingredient used in Acid
house tracks when the largely drug fueled scene emerged in
london and manchester during the late eighties.

it

it's subjective but i don't agree...

to me "acid" would rather refer to some kind of electronic
high-pitched sounds.

by the way, i never heard any "acid" track i found good so
far...

"to me "acid" would rather refer to some kind of electronic

high-pitched sounds. "

kinda what makes acid acid imo :)

"In truth, acid house had already started long before the
first 'Acid Trax' were commerically released. Amongst the
scores of Chicagoans who were buying equipment and trying to
learn how to make tracks was one DJ Pierre, who'd started
out playing Italian imports at roller discos in the Chicago
suburbs, and who had joined Lil Louis for his notorious
parties.

"Phuture was me and two other guys, Spanky and Herbert J."
remembers Pierre. "We had this Roland 303, which was a
bassline machine, and we were trying to figure out how to
use it. When we switched it on, that acid sound was already
in it and we liked the sound of it so we decided to add some
drums and make a track with it. We gave it to Ron Hardy who
started playing it straight away. In fact, the first time he
played it, he played it four times in one night! The first
time people were like, 'what the fuck is this?' but by the
the fourth they loved it. Then I started to hear that Ron
was playing some new thing they were calling 'Ron Hardy's
Acid Trax', and everybody thought it was something he'd made
himself. Eventually we found out that it was our track so we
called it 'Acid Trax'. I think we may have made it as early
as 1985, but Ron was playing it for a long time before it
came out."

ah... well : )
maybe i don't find it high-pitched because i listen to
Sachiko M and the likes? or maybe i just heard
non-representative tracks so far
anyway, i have my own idea of a sound that would "taste
acid" but i can't describe it.

When you do acid you notice your body more. Your orifices.
Your asshole. Your mouth. Farting. The farty mouthy asshole
sound of the 303 is how you notice your body while on acid.
Or, parties in detroit were fueled by lsd when this tb-303
music started to arise. Thus, acid. Those are my guesses.

My god... I know what you mean about hearing your body when
on acid. Its really really bizarre. Sometimes it really
really scared me!
Acid does sound similar to those noises! haha... I never
thought of that. Scientifically makes sense why acid can be
a form of music... it makes noises that we can relate to due
to metabolism. Or am I just thinking too much?

....Mmmm nachos. (holy guacamole).

(correct me if im wrong anyone) theres some rather crude
things (resonance filter) inside the 303 that makes those
gnarly sounds. if you hit the notes quick after eachother
you get the trademark high pitched gliding sounds, like the
music in
this

to me it definately sounds high pitched.

The name "Acid" has nothing to do with drugs (as you say LSD
isn't prevalent in acid-music). Originally, it came from "to
burn" people. Namely, using uncleared samples. The term came
to be associated with the 303 sound, despite it actually
relating to samples. However, hardly anyone knows this and
you see all manner of cock and bull theories, even in music
publicaitons...

ceri jc what do you say about that quote from

http://www.jahsonic.com/AcidHouse.html

???

either way, the term seems to have more to do w/ burn than
drugs, at least initially. genesis p.oridge was early on and
you can't say HE wasn't into drugs :)

regardless of origins 303 IS acid sound, the GLIDE is key to
authentic programing, but it's an analog machine so the
hardware itself is special as well ...

tho some software like creakbox (free vst) and audiorealism
bassline (expensive vst) have now come close to tricking
people, especially those without ACID-TRAINED ears

Acid = Techno with a 303 bassline.

End of story.

I can't believe some of the other stuff I am seeing. :s

that thing that made us talk to each other on the
computer???

CREAKBOX ACID AKA 303 VST

now the question is what drum machine is more acid than any
other???

and maybe for original acid u needed "Burner" samples, but
all the acid HOUSE i hear has guys sort of sexy whispering
things like "this is acid" on repeate with some other
mumbling . . .

I believe it's from How To DJ: Properly by Broughton &
Brewster (I'll check tonight though, there was something
else I wanted to look up in it). I think the definitive
guide to DJing, written by 2 hugely experienced club DJs,
who were there when acid house took off and whose knowledge
about absolutely everything DJ/club related is almost 100%
spot on (read the book), makes it more "official" in my eyes
than any other description I've heard.

I don't contest that it now means the 303 sound Kado
describes. My point relates to the origins of the term.

Embarresed about your age, eh? ;0)

I'd of loved to have been old enough to go out when it all
started off. Late 80s and early 90s I used to read comics in
my elder borther's room listening to tapes of techno and
acid.

There was quite a healthy rave scene in the disused docks
warehouses in my home town (that he used to go to), but
again, I was too young.

I then stopped listening to electronic music for about 8
years, before re-discovering it. Quite nice to hear Tricky
Disco - Tricky Disco and LFO - LFO years later and still
like 'em.

do with magic mushrooms + they had a student acid house
night on wednesdays (called hot night) that was cheaper than
the friday/staurday shindigs
